Yes, most Russians are Eastern Orthodox. A lot of them are still Atheist, thanks to the good-old-Soviet life of yesteryear.
I'm more of an Agnostic kind of a gal. :)
I don't believe in a Minister, Rabbi, or a Priest telling me how to run my daily life. Especially when most of them are in a panic mode right now, over this gay marriage issue. That's probably why many Christian groups are trying to recruit as many new suckers as they can these days. :D

Misery loves company, you know. Well, let's see here. You made a really lame and amoral joke about gays. Then, you went on to say that morals and religion, or I should say, Christianty?, because I know that you think that Christianity is the only religion, go hand in hand. Anyone who doesn't have Christianity to guide them through life so they won't do things like say, raping twelve year old boys, as the the Catholic priests have been doing now for centuries, has no morals.
Logic Holybyte. Logic! Yeah man! Right on! Go morals! We agnostics and such, we don't know the differnce between right and wrong because we don't have gay bashers like you, and Catholic priest rapists to guide us.
tooboo4you 03-05-2004, 08:12 PM Wow. I would have to say no thank you because I feel a relationship with God is personal. However, I certainly wouldn't berate a person for respectfully asking.

I didn't lose mine. :)
Besides, most religions have lost a lot more morals than me. That's why I'm not interested in them. I think they should clean up their own acts and sins before they decide to advertise, and brag to the public about how great they are. Sounds to me that they are getting desperate. ;)
The majorty of Christian (Especially Evangelists) groups are only trying to recruit people so they can run a big anti-gay marriage campaign. Pretty tacky move- But I won't go for it. Sorry! :)

That is not at all what Christians believe. At least, it's not what I believe. If you are a good person throughout your life, you definitely do not have to believe in God to get to Heaven.

What is amazing is that someone who has been on this particular message board for several years now is posting a post that says it is amazing that people post their thoughts as they please on a thread.

Czas na Zywiec 03-05-2004, 11:52 PM Catholic here. Yea, we all rape little children, it's in our doctrine. (Shows you how much generalizing is a bad way of grouping people.)
My basic belief is that if you strive to be a good person, you'll go to heaven. You could be Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, Agnostic, Athetist, etc., and still be a good person. Just because you happen to be born half way around the world in a mountain village isolated from the rest of the world and you and your family practice Hinduism doesn't mean you're automaticaly going to hell. I don't buy it, because then what would be the reason for God even creating you? Does he need a few laughs? Just so you can be condemed to hell right from the start? Yea, I don't think so. God isn't some cruel, patriarcal figure who wants to cause harm to people for no particular reason.

That's what I believe. I think this is a good idea for a thread, to let people who may be curious know the story of Jesus. However, I don't think you can push someone into a relationship with God. It's a personal thing that happens in someone's heart. In my opinion, religion isn't what's important, it's the relationship that matters.

:D I do not believe that is true either. I mean what would be the purpose of free will and all if all good people went to heaven? How can you define who is good and what is bad? To God all sin is equal-it is just sin. Someone who lies to their parents about eating their vegetables and someone who has killed another person have done the same thing, just in a different way. They both have sinned. So, no one is a "good" person through and through. They can try to do right, but no one is perfect. That is why God gave us a choice weather we want to accept that we have sinned and done wrong in our life and ask for guidance and forgivness, or we can choose not to accept it, and pay the consequences.

Ok then, scenario time.
Let's say that you see a piece of trash on the ground. It is a common belief that it is our saviour, and if you worship it, you will go to heaven and have anything you've ever wanted for eternity; if you don't, you will suffer the most possible pain and torture in hell. You don't want to suffer and love the idea of going to heaven, so you start to put your mind into thinking that a piece of trash is holy. Now, way in the back of your mind, will you actually think some worthless crap that someone just threw on the ground is sacred? probably not.
I'm not comparing god to a piece of garbage, but its along the same lines. if your mind truly does not believe in something, only nature will change that.

They both have sinned. So, no one is a "good" person through and through. They can try to do right, but no one is perfect. That is why God gave us a choice weather we want to accept that we have sinned and done wrong in our life and ask for guidance and forgivness, or we can choose not to accept it, and pay the consequences.
I didn't say that "perfect" people went to Heaven...'cause then we'd all be rotting in hell. (Except me, of course. ;))
This is how I think it goes:
If a person kills someone else, but is truly sorry for it and asks God's forgiveness, they will be forgiven and have a good chance of getting to Heaven. But if a person steals a candy bar from a store and isn't sorry or doesn't ask for forgiveness, they have less of a chance.
That may sound a bit extreme, but it makes sense to me.

I think I would be saying to myself, 'Dangit, I should have taken that girl up on this or that, and I should have robbed that sleepy hollow bank, and I should've... etc.' At least that way I would have gotten some bang for my buck, :) ;)

A candy bar is just a bit of an exaggeration. I'm just saying that it doesn't matter how bad the sin is, as long as you're truly sorry for it. :D

I've never been there, but I know I would like it. Just going by the fact that there is always mild weather would impress me. And, of course, the beaches.

Could you tell me the difference between Catholic and Protestant? Protestantism is the general name for hundreds of Christian denominations and sects that differ slightly or greatly from one another. About 380 million people—about 7 percent of the world's population—belong to these various groups. Among Christian bodies, only the Roman Catholic Church has more members.
Protestantism resulted chiefly from the Reformation, a religious and political movement that began in Europe in the early 1500's. The word Protestant comes from the Latin word protestans, which means one who protests. It was first used in 1529 at a diet (formal assembly) in Speyer, Germany. At the diet, several German leaders protested an attempt by Roman Catholics to limit the practice of Lutheranism, an early Protestant movement. The leaders became known as Protestants. The name soon came to include all of the Western Christians who had left the Roman Catholic Church.
Most Protestants live in Europe and North America, but the number of Protestants is increasing in such areas as Africa and Latin America. A Protestant denomination is the state religion of a number of nations, including Denmark, Norway, and the United Kingdom. Protestantism has strongly influenced the cultural, political, and social history of these and other countries.
Roman Catholic Church is the largest body of Christians in the world. It has about 1 billion members—nearly a fifth of the world's population. Roman Catholics are most heavily concentrated in Europe, North America, and South America. But the percentage of the Catholic population in both Africa and Asia is growing.
The Roman Catholic Church traces its beginnings to about A.D. 30, when Jesus Christ instructed the apostles, His followers, to spread His teaching about the Kingdom of God. Roman Catholics believe that Christ rose from the dead after being crucified and sent the Holy Spirit to guide the apostles.
Roman Catholics believe that Jesus Christ founded the church to carry to all people the salvation He brought to the world. They also believe that, with God's assistance, the church has faithfully preserved the teachings of Christ. According to Catholic teaching, the Holy Spirit continues to guide the church.
The pope, who is the bishop of Rome, serves as the head of the Roman Catholic Church. He governs the church from Vatican City, a tiny independent country within the city of Rome. Throughout the world, other bishops lead local churches.
The Roman Catholic Church has been an important force in world history. During much of the Middle Ages, for example, the church had great political power in Western Europe. Its universities and monasteries were centers of learning, and they preserved much of the heritage of the Greek and Roman cultures. During the 1500's and 1600's, Catholic missionaries traveled to Africa, Asia, and the Americas, preaching the gospel and spreading European culture.
Throughout its history, the Catholic faith has inspired many great works of art. These works include the Gothic cathedrals built in France in the Middle Ages and the frescoes painted in the Vatican in the early 1500's by the Italian artist Michelangelo.
This article discusses Roman Catholic Church (Roman Catholic beliefs) (Worship) (Church organization) (The early church) (Growth of the church in Europe) (Growth of the church outside Europe) (The church today).
Hope This Helps.

ABlairican Pie 03-07-2004, 01:20 PM I was about to say concerning the differences between Catholicism and Protestantism are that the former means "universal" (Catholic=universal, all one), anything outside of the traditional church is wrong and forbidden. The Catholic church emphasizes following official church teaching and practising liturgy and sacraments as necessary for the faith of the believer. Protestantism affirms the freedom of the individual believer in matters of faith and Scriptural interpretation. As a Catholic priest Martin Luther struggled with the issue of faith and works ("Are we saved by the religious works we do?") and realized that the letters of Apostle Paul were stating that the righteous are justified by grace through faith and not of works , and was profoundly changed though the understanding of verses asserting God's unmerited love, which run counter to the Catholic practice of indulgences, which he believed made people believe they could "buy" their way out of Purgatory and and "pay" for absoution of their sins. Christ paid the penalty of our sins through his death on the cross and all that is required is placing our trust on him and his act on the cross to forgive us of our sins.
