McDonald's Menu to Go on Diet in 2005

CHICAGO - Say goodbye to those super-sized fries — McDonald's is slimming down its menu.
The hamburger giant has started phasing out its trademark Supersize fries and drinks in its U.S. restaurants as part of an effort to simplify its menu and give customers choices that support "a balanced lifestyle," a company spokesman said Tuesday.
By the end of 2004, Supersize will no longer be available at the nation's 13,000-plus McDonald's outlets except in certain promotions, McDonald's spokesman Walt Riker said.
The move comes as the world's largest restaurant company, and fast-food chains in general, are under growing public pressure to give consumers healthier food options in a nation that has suddenly become aware of its bulging waistline and the health dangers that come with it.
McDonald's began offering entree salads last year and has been moving to provide more fruit, vegetable and yogurt options with its Happy Meals. But the Oak Brook, Ill.-based company remains a magnet for public concerns — and legal actions — about obesity.
Riker said the changes started going into effect in January.
"This core menu, which has been under development since 2002, simplifies our menu and restaurant operations and provides a balance of choices for our customers," he said. "A component of this overall simplification, menu and balanced lifestyle strategy is the ongoing phase-out of the Supersize fry and the Supersize drink options."
The company did not immediately disclose other details of the menu changes.
PZelda 03-03-2004, 01:16 AM Well -- it's about time! The whole time they've had the Supersize thing on their menu, I've gotten it maybe...twice or thrice...I really don't like supersize. :p
I am Him 03-03-2004, 01:49 AM McDonalds has tried this in the past, and it resulted in reduced sales. People want fatty food.
Chelsea 03-03-2004, 01:53 AM I'm beginning to think that all the drugs in the 60s whacked out our self-preservation instincts in our parents (or ourselves, depending on age), and subsequently, that got handed down to us. Seriously, Are we trying to kill ourselves? Booze, Cigarettes, Fast Food 3-meals-a-day, Ugh...
dawsongirl 03-03-2004, 02:01 AM McDonald's food is hazardous waste no matter how much is there.l

I know I sure don't.
EricIdlefan 03-03-2004, 09:42 AM And it's too greasy in fact for their burgers so I only get a chicken salad when I am there because my nephews and niece love Mickey D's!!
FamilyTiesGOP 03-03-2004, 09:59 PM I simply do not eat McDonald's food. I only eat there once in awhile for breakfast because my visiting grandfather wants to take me there. A healthier menu will not get me in there any better either. However, low fat food will make a lot of people angry...
EricIdlefan 03-03-2004, 10:02 PM I do admit to liking their hot(pan)cakes!!

Yeah, they are pretty good. I had a McGriddle a few months ago and it was not very good!
julian bozo 03-03-2004, 10:42 PM I used to really really like Mc Donald's but lately in the past 2 years it has been:thumbsdow . I think I could help my diet by staying away from Mc Donald's.
Rebel Queen 1980 03-04-2004, 12:53 AM Yeah,My dad was wondering if the new menu change meant less
special sauce on the Big Mac.My dad loves those things just because he loves the taste of the sauce...

I stopped eating the big mac because they hardly put any special sauce on it { up here in PA) anyway.
SBTB Geek 03-04-2004, 02:12 AM That's great, I'm loving their Salads & More menu.
JoJoJoJoJoJoJoJoJo 03-04-2004, 12:17 PM Tha'ts just stupid. What idiot goes to McDonalds and expects to receive and low fat, low calorie, healthy meal? Hello, subway... or heck, just coook at home! Yes, i think offering salads and all that other stuff is good, more options, but completely offing the whole fatty hamburger thing is just stupid. I'm sorry,b ut if you go to McDonald's expecting to loose weight then you have really lost too much in the head.

I just heard on the radio that Super Sized has only 2 more grams of fat than the Large. And not that many more calories. IMO I just see this as a marketing ploy. People who bought Super will just buy 2 Large. And McDonalds will make more money.
EricIdlefan 03-04-2004, 01:34 PM No wonder I go to Burger King more than McDonalds because the Golden Arch wants more money and with it comes more grease while home of the whopper makes their burgers more broiled!!
fr00ti 03-04-2004, 01:38 PM NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I love super size.
EricIdlefan 03-05-2004, 10:50 PM I bet other restaurants will follow as well FYI!!
ABlairican Pie 03-06-2004, 11:49 AM I know I need to lose weight, but.....
I WANT MY SUPER-SIZED!!!!!!!!!! :(
barwars 03-06-2004, 12:54 PM I never get super-sized anyways.
But I still say its a bad move.... people might share the fries.
I think its just a way for them to make more money.
And screw McDonald's anyways.
Im a Wendy's kinda-guy.
Brent88 03-06-2004, 03:58 PM I like Wendy's, Sonic, and Burger King fries(and most food for that matter) better than McDonald's, but occasionally I do eat there because their food is OK.
I always get the largest order of fries anyway. I love them(I know, they aren't good for me, please don't lecture).

You're not kidding!!!
Tuesday Weld 03-07-2004, 10:19 PM I don't like McDonald's, or any fast food, so I don't care. :D
Kristina 03-07-2004, 11:26 PM I really don't care cause I don't eat meat anymore, even if I did I wouldn't eat there. The cheeseburgers smell like diapers and taste like ****ted diapers.
And that's not going to stop pigs, they'll just order double. Like I said before, "pigs will be pigs."
*Marilyn Monroe* 03-07-2004, 11:34 PM I love McDonalds. Since I have off-campus lunch, and am extremely broke all the time, the $ Menu has saved my life. I may just be addicted to McDonalds.
This whole no more super size thing doesn't really affect me, but it's not going to help. People are going to get more food, whether you offer it to them in a handy name (i.e., Super Size) or longer name (i.e., 2 mediums and a large)
MandieR1980 03-08-2004, 12:45 AM I don't eat that crap so I don't care but if they want to go healthy they'd have to get rid of their whole menu
fr00ti 03-08-2004, 01:54 AM Everyone makes it seem like the only people that eat at McDonald's are fat slobs. That's not true. Not everyone is.
Mr. Television 03-08-2004, 01:55 AM I see a lot of thin people eating at McDonalds.
EricIdlefan 03-08-2004, 05:31 PM Come to think of it I have too!! No wonder the Golden Arch is going on a diet!!

But, if these people are thin, what's the point of going on a diet? You don't diet because you're skinny, you diet because you're fat.
I wonder if the people who complain about this try this thing called eating at home. Cooking it yourself. Maybe even *gasp* working out! If there's a problem, it's their own fault.

not totally true I know skinny people who diet they do it to stay fit.
Bang A Gong 03-09-2004, 08:55 PM The words "McDonalds" and "diet" do not belong in the same sentence. Talk about a major contradiction.
EricIdlefan 03-09-2004, 11:46 PM They definately don't mix you are right about that!!
