Okay, so my current project is putting my Lucy movies on DVD. Which will take forever and a day I realized, but that's beside the point. :lol: Anyway, this got me rewatching some of them, and I came to the conclusion that Miss Grant Takes Richmond is my fav. Maybe it's cuz I like William Holden too. Who knows.

So whatever movie related you wanna talk about go ahead. I just felt like saying that. :talk:

I'm glad you brought that up because i wanted to start a similar thread on what all Lucy fans are doing about converting all their priceless Lucy stuff currently on VHS to DVD. What did you do? Bought a DVD recorder? What brand? How much? Then you got blanks, how long do they record? Can you hook up a VHS to a DVD recorder and just transfer things that are copyable and not in Macrovision? Any help you could provide would be appreciated. I want to start transferring all my old Lucy things before i lose them.

I wonder if when you transfer them the quality is better? :)

No well , when you copy a BAD copy is stays BAD, but at least it will never deteriorate or get worse though! And the tape won't break from being played too often which is what happened to my Lucy at the Kennedy Center Honors!

Seventeen other questions but this he knows....:rolleyes: Maybe they make them that digitally enhance the copies. I mean if they can put a man on the moon you'd think.........oh well never mind, you're probably right. :)

I record old movies that will probably naver make it to DVD onto DVCam from my satellite system, transfer them to my computer, edit the commercials out (if necessary) and burn them to DVD-R.

So far the only Lucy movie I have is The Long, Long Trailer. I missed Forever Darling the last time it was on Turner Classic Movies (had a tape malfunction) and am anxiously awaiting for it to air again!

No, not really, but unlike VHS transfers, you don't lose quality.

Only problem is (at least with my recorder), if the copy is too bad, the DVD recorder won't take it...it refuses to record what it has trouble reading. So basically it's stuck on tape.

1. Yes. I bought a stand alone DVD recorder. Philips model DVDR985. I think that one's been discontinued and replaced by another model.

2. When I bought it, it was $800. It's a lot less than that now.

3. A blank DVD has 4 speeds...HQ records 1 hour. SP records 2 hours. LP records 4 hours. And SLP records 6. And the quality goes down the more you put on a DVD, just like a tape. I think they are all the same, but I am basing this on DVD+R, not DVD-R.

4. Yep. My VCR is connected to the recorder and I just put in a tape, press play, and when I get to what I want to record, push record on the DVDR. Just make sure you don't have like your VCR's display on the screen, because the recorder will record that too.

Hmm...tips...

Make sure you get a warranty. Repairs are not cheap. I had to send mine back once, but didn't have to pay a thing. :D

If you have a lot to convert, buy a spindle of DVDs. It's cheaper to buy in bulk.

When you first start, you might want to buy a couple DVD+RW's (or DVD-RW, depending on what the recorder records in). The RW's can be recorded on over and over again, so if you make a mistake, you can just start over. The R's are write once only, so if you mess up, you ruined the disc and wasted 2 bucks.

Oh wait...I forgot Lured. I bought that on DVD.

The only one I have that's an actual tape is Yours, Mine and Ours. The rest are copied off TV or from a friend ;) I'm not complaining though. I think I have 6. :) Maybe 5 or 7. I'll have to count em.

AND DAWSON GIRL, THANKS FOR ALL THAT INFORMATION, THAT WAS WAY TOO KIND OF YOU TO GO TO SO MUCH DETAIL, BUT IT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED. Of course, to get back to Lodee's question, computer people can do and fix anything, they must have ways of fixing any problem, i just meant for amateurs like us, i'll start by getting the DVD recorder and try hooking it up, anything that perserves our collections forever will be worth the trouble. It sounds complicated, and after Laser Discs and Beta, now we have to go through it again with VHS and DVD, so annoying! But at least these will last longer, so it will be worth the trouble, and if i can save my old Lucy things from twenty years ago, all the better. But bad to hear bad copies won't go to DVD, even some original cheap knock offs are BAD copies!

But those Turner movies are so short you can put as many as 5 on the one tape!

I haven't copied one that was over 90 mins yet. And the Annabel movies were short too.

I KNOW, i was shocked to find so many at just over an hour, like 65 minutes or 68 or 70, i couldn't get over getting as many as FIVE on the one tape. I guess Woody Allen is not the only director who thinks you CAN tell a story in an hour instead of two!

They certainly more tolerable to sit thru than these so called epics that are like 3 hrs long. I'm too restless for that.

Well, that's the thing, you can watch part one day and the rest the next day, but there are so few things worth watching when they are stretched out like that, if the story is well laid out though and the subject matter is interesting enough and the acting is good, it is possible you know, but very rare.
