View Full Version : Artists with solo carrers more successful than the group
What artists that were in successful bands or groups, had a solo carrer that was more successful then the band or group he or she was in?
Michael Jackson (Jackson 5/Jacksons)
Peter Gabriel (Genious)
Phil Collins (Genious)
Robert Palmar (Power Station)
Luther Vandrous (Change)
Chaka Kaun (Rufus)
Jody Watley (Shalamar)
And this selection I think is debatable, if this artist's solo carrer was more successful then his band.
Sting (the Police)
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 03-01-2004, 07:57 PM Beyonce - Destiny's Child
Justin Timberlake - NSYNC. He hasnt sold as much records and such, but he is still everywhere.
Dean Winchester 03-01-2004, 07:58 PM Lionel Richie (Commodores)
George Michael (Wham)
Billy Idol (Generation X)
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 03-01-2004, 07:58 PM Mm.. what about Lionel Richie from The Commodores? Not to sure which was more popular, but he's a well-known name.
Nick Lachey - 98* Not necessarily for the music, but ever since Newlyweds, everyone knows who he is.
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 03-01-2004, 08:00 PM o0o and how about Diana Ross from The Supremes..
Dean Winchester 03-01-2004, 08:14 PM while he's never gotten too big in the states, I think most of our British posters can agree with Robbie Williams (Take That)
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 03-01-2004, 08:21 PM What about The Beatles' John, Paul, George, and Ringo? Im sure The Beatles were def. more popular than their solo careers, but they did pretty good on their own too.

Just a little nitpick here (I'm such an itchy arse--I only seem to come to sitcomsonline anymore with nitpicks)-- The Power Station doesn't really count to me... I mean technically, YEAH, Robert Palmer was more successful than Power Station, but the Power Station was just a "side project." They never set out to be a "regular group." I don't even think they had any intention of releasing more than that one album.
Anyways, good topic though. Off the top of my head, all I can think of that hasn't been mentioned is Adam Ant. LOL.

Hi, Janice! You're so nice! When I moved in Sept, and it took forever for my computer to get hooked up, I just lost track of the board. Even though I've had access to the internet ever since October, I just keep forgetting to return! I see some of the regulars have changed their names. It's so hard to keep up. But I love this place still! Hopefully I can get into the groove again.
Dean Winchester 03-09-2004, 04:05 AM from a sales standpoint (even tho "hits" wise, Eurythmics were bigger), Annie Lennox has been more successful as a solo artist than as the leader of Eurythmics
Bjork and The Sugarcubes also come to mind. Sugarcubes were critically acclaimed in their time, but Bjork has completely overshadowed them as a solo artist
Linda Ronstadt enjoyed 1 hit single with The Stone Poney's in the late 1960's (Different Drum) but her career didn't really take off until she went solo, and then she became one of the most successful female artists of all time. Yet Stone Poneys were a one hit wonder
others I can think of
Enya (Clannad)
Natalie Merchant (10,000 Maniacs)
Kenny Rogers (The First Edition)
Ozzy (Black Sabbath)
Ryan Adams (Whiskeytown)
Gloria Estefan (Miami Sound Machine)
Joan Jett (The Runaways)
Patti LaBelle (LaBelle)
Kenny Loggins (Loggins & Messina)
vashti1999 03-09-2004, 02:43 PM Missy Elliott: a billion times more successful than the no hit wonder group she was in, Sista. I recall the one video they had on BET years ago. It was forgettable but now Missy has made a name for herself big time.
Dean Winchester 03-09-2004, 02:53 PM not a rap fan, but I think it's pretty safe to assume most people have forgotten that 2pac was in Digital Underground at this point (yes, the group that did The Humpty Dance, lol)
SBTB Geek 03-09-2004, 02:53 PM Lil' Kim- Junior M.A.F.I.A.

Britney was actually IN that group? I seem to remember on an MTV show in about 2001 (was it called Biography?) that said she was asked to join the group, but turned it down.

And probably 3/4 of that has to do with his time as a Beatle.

Surprisingly, the majority of his money comes from all the publishing rights he owns. Paul's company, MPL Communications (http://www.mplcommunications.com), owns the rights to every song you see listed at the linked site.
~*Hannah_Lee*~ 03-11-2004, 12:52 AM Wow, I can see how he'd earn a couple of bucks that way.

Paul's solo career gets the shaft. I remember Michael Jackson fans on a board were talking about Paul, and someone said "Paul McCartney IS NOT A SUCCESSFUL SOLO ARTIST" and then I put him in his place and he never replied.
Paul has never quite been as big as Michael Jackson, Elvis or Elton John solo, but he is certainly still among the top 10 biggest solo male artists in history nonetheless.
He sold millions upon millions of albums in the 70's and early 80's, even if The Beatles had never happened and "McCartney" had been his very first album in any group or format, he'd still be a very rich and respected artist IMO.
AllIWantIsYourClutch 03-11-2004, 07:02 PM Ricky Martin- Menudo (or however you spell it)
Mijada 03-13-2004, 09:56 AM Stevie Nicks had a pretty successful solo career in the 80's. I'm so glad to see her back with Fleetwood Mac now though.

I guess SBTB Geek ignores me in music chat, lol. Oh well, I suppose I could look that info up myself.

Shiver me timbers! The Power Station did release a second album in 1996. That right there cancels them out as just a side project of 1985.
