I assume what you meant to ask was, "Why does Mary move to a new apartment?" LOL. In the show, the reason was that Mary became depressed b/c her friends were all leading such exciting lives, and she was still doing the same thing as always.

In real life, I think the people who owned the house where the exteriors were done for the first apartment wouldn't let them use the house anymore, so they had to find a new one.

I always thought the new apartment was kind of ugly. The old one was more homey.

Although I always liked her at work more....
I prefer the second apartment.
(and I also happen to like the end of the series more)

I also like Mary's first apartment better. The view was nice. I liked the Phylis and Rhoda days. Her second place seemed too closed in.
There were good episodes in both dwellings though.

I liked her first apartment best :) Although the 2nd one does have its advantages, like when I'm watching the random episode on TV and suddenly they show the 2nd apartment, I can immediately narrow down my later search to find out what episode it was ;)
