View Full Version : Movies that you just couldn't understand
Brian 02-28-2004, 01:39 AM Have you ever seen a movie that you just don't comprehend? I had an experience with a 70s movie called Phase IV. The film is a 1973 movie about killer ants that, unlike the radioactive giant ones you might have seen in Them!, are normal sized ones. I have seen this movie uncut on a KTMA episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 several times and I just couldn't grasp it. Sure there were ants that killed people but words could not describe how difficult it was to understand the film. The ending didn't help any. In the end, after about 2-3 viewings, I just gave up trying to figure it out.
Who else has had a similar experience?
Sterling Holobyte 02-28-2004, 01:56 AM I don't know if this fits, but I had a problem with The Royal Tennenbaums(don't know if I spelled that right, and I don't care). It was just a crappy, disjointed movie to me and I felt like my brain cells were dying just watching it! And I don't remember any of it so maybe you could say that I didn't understand what the director was trying to convey with this movie. But maybe it would be more fitting to say it is a movie I just couldn't understand... why I rented it!
Janice 02-28-2004, 02:05 AM I felt like I was having an aneurysm while watching Vanilla Sky. It was the weirdest and most confusing movie I think I've ever seen.
dandelion wine 02-28-2004, 02:11 AM Like Janice, Vanilla Sky was a movie I had a difficult time understanding. But the one that really sticks out for me is A Clockwork Orange. Had to be one of the most bizarre, disturbing, creepy movies I'd ever seen.

Really?
I love that movie. If you're gonna question any Rildey Scott movie, I would choose "Legend."
I have no idea what's going on there.
;)
webuster 02-28-2004, 11:17 AM Dark City, I've watched it a few times, because it's a great film- each time I understand a bit more, but it's still a very complicated film.
I've never seen Legend, but Ridley Scott says there's 20 minutes of extra footage for Legend, but he just can't find it anywhere!

"Legend" was a big mess. I don't think an extra twenty minutes of footage will help clarify anything.
Penny Lane 02-28-2004, 01:00 PM The opening scenes in "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind." I had to watch the movie 3 times before I figured out what was going on there!:bonk:
But it is now on my top 10 favorite movies list!:happyface

I take it you are not a sci-fi fan!
I loved all those movies. Well, except for Return of the King because I haven't seen it yet.
But, I understand, my wife doesn't undestand Blade Runner(my favorite movie after Star Wars(1st trilogy)) or Dune either.
