This says nothing about Carroll O'Connor being a liberal, or at least left-of-center? O'Connor would likely have been infuriated to fall into a progressive conversation with anyone resembling Archie Bunker. O'Connor, however, may (I don't know enough to say for sure) have been more like the 'voice of reason' when confronting his Archie-like counterpart, instead of doing as much indignant shouting of his own, like "Meathead" Stivic.

I agree. From what I read, Carroll wasn't a SHOUTER

I don't think Carroll was a shouter either. I do think that he was an outspoken man. I know he had his issues with the show and Norman Lear.

Also, after his son Hugh's tragic death, Carroll was enraged beyond belief with grief. I remember his very emotional press conferences calling to have the drug dealer who sold his son drugs to be arrested.

I've always felt that Carroll O'Connor died inside the day he lost his son.
