View Full Version : Lucy should have been in "Gone with the Wind"
x1LucyFanx 02-22-2004, 04:20 PM I just got "Lucy Fakes Illness" on DVD and I think she would have played a good Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone with the Wind"...LOL, she can do a good southern accent, but like someone said before "Even Clark Gable couldn't even look in her big, blue eyes and say "Frankly, I don't give a d***." Too bad...
MagsLovesLucy 02-22-2004, 04:27 PM Haha! :) I believe it was Joan Collins who said that at the All-Star Party for Lucy. I think most of us know the story of what happened when Lucy auditioned for Gone with the Wind. Still, there's a picture of her in Loving Lucy dressed as Scarlett O'Hara, and she looks positively stunning!
x1LucyFanx 02-22-2004, 08:28 PM I have that book...I'll have to check it out! ;)
Amber8611 02-22-2004, 11:33 PM I saw "Gone with the Wind" for the first time last week and I could definitely see Lucy in that role. Just watch "The Big Street," Gloria Lyons' attitude was pretty similar to Scarlett O'Hara's. It's too bad her audition had to go like that because she'd be great in that movie.
SPLAIN 02-23-2004, 11:11 AM But if she'd won the Oscar for Gone with the Wind, we might not have gotten Lucy Ricardo! For those who don't know the story, she drove to the studio and got lost and got drenched in a downpour and showed up soaking wet, dried by the fireplace in Selznick's office with a Brandy the secretary got her and did the whole audition on her knees. The upshot was she said she always had trouble finding that Culver City studio, even later on when she owned it! LOL!
Kazza 02-23-2004, 01:52 PM Why she was on her knees ;because of the Scotch?? and yes, Lucy would always get lost inside the studios even when she owned them. Isnt there a story about her asking Desi where the exit was and him telling her that after all those years she hadn't figured it out yet??
SPLAIN 02-23-2004, 02:02 PM Desilu Gower and Cahuenga were both easily found, they were centraly located, but Desilu Culver is out in the sticks, you see it every night on Wheel of Fortune, that old style Columned building that looks like the set for Gone with the Wind. That's the one she couldn't find because she seldom had any reason to go there. As for the reason for her being on her knees, she was drying out by the fireplace, and the fireplace i assume was low and not high, but she never thought to rise when Selznick came in, too nervous i guess!
Kazza 02-23-2004, 02:53 PM Probably Selznick thought Lucy wouldn't fit the part because of her 'height problem"?:D
SPLAIN 02-23-2004, 03:13 PM I have an answer that could close this board down, lemme clean it up and say maybe Lucy assumed the normal position for an actress auditioning back then and maybe even now, although nowadays both sexes might do it that way. If we only knew how many GOOD actors lost jobs to these individuals with no scruples who just wanted to get ahead, so to speak, so unfair and maybe why movies are so bad nowadays.
Kazza 02-23-2004, 03:19 PM  I can't imagine Lucy on the title role:eek: . Then we would be without ILL then:(
SPLAIN 02-23-2004, 03:24 PM If you ever see the Here's Lucy episode with Flip Wilson, Lucy actually does play that role, so you can judge for yourself.:)
ARealLucyFan 02-23-2004, 05:25 PM Lucy was on her knees because Marcell Rabwin gave her a long sweater to put on while her clothes were drying out and it wasn't long enough, so she had to be on her knees to cover herself.
x1LucyFanx 02-23-2004, 10:09 PM I heard all of those stories but I never heard that the sweater wasn't long enough, but thats kind of funny.
SPLAIN 02-24-2004, 10:12 AM Thanks for the info on the sweater, didn't remember that part. Apparently Selznick was surprised by her audition and thought it was different, don't forget the man had done this thousands of times with every woman in Hollywood. This was THE most sought after role in Hollywood as the book had caused such a sensation. And i seem to recall Gone with the Wind was the biggest money earner ever for decades afterwards until The Sound of Music took over the title. And, they also say if you adjust for inflation, it would still have the title today.

SPLAIN 02-25-2004, 04:37 PM I liked Yabadabadoo myself and some of those answers were awesome, so clever. I always have trouble with things like popcorn, but even I know when the pops diminish, get ready to take it out, regardless of the microwave or the age or the power, it was just so funny.

Exactly. And if you're suspended, you're like temporarily banished, but after a couple weeks, you can come back. Banned means you can't ever come back. But they try...and try...and try. Despite the fact that they're almost always caught.
dawsongirl 02-28-2004, 12:25 AM Or...there have been people who have pretended to be 2 different people at the same time.
SPLAIN 03-01-2004, 11:04 AM Oh i see, and they post and answer themselves huh? Like they used to say the only way to have an intelligent conversation is to talk to YOURSELF! LOL! I'll get you for that avatar Lodee!
