View Full Version : NFL News and Notes
EricIdlefan 02-21-2004, 11:05 PM For those of you who are missing the NFL(including yours truly!!) I will see if NFL off-season news will hold you all over until the pre-season:
Mark Brunell has signed a eight-year $43 million dollar deal with the Washington Redskins and will replace Patrick Ramsey, who has struggled in his first two seasons, as the starting QB. The deal comes with an $8.6 million dollar bonus
Orlando Pace has been given a one-year $7 million dollar deal in hopes of the St Louis Rams signing him to a long term deal. His agent has offered a eight-year $80 million dollar deal with a $23 million dollar signing bonus
The Indianapolis RCA Dome is the site for this weekend's combine training for rookies and other rookies think that Maurice Clarette is skipping the training because in his words "His mother has told him so" and think he is dumb to come out so early and play in the NFL. A few other players are following in Clarette's lead much less to the chargin of NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue
edoug 02-22-2004, 05:30 AM With all the Quarterbacks available,This going to be a busy off-seasons. Where's Henson going to land? Other QB's on the move could be Garcia, Ramsey, Brees and who knows who else.
Brian Damage 02-22-2004, 01:19 PM The skins gave Brunelle 8 years?!?!?!? What the heck are they thinking? He's on the downside of his career.

I really don't understand that. I think Ramsey can be a very good QB if his offensive line was any good.

Yeah i don't know why he got a 8 year deal but it was a good move making him the starter.

Ramsey is not mobile and Brunell has a scrambling ability
EricIdlefan 02-22-2004, 02:44 PM The franchise tag was placed on Raiders CB Charles Woodson
Peyton Manning and his agent are trying to hammer out a long-term deal with the Colts and the deadline is approaching and if Peyton and the Colts don't meet the March deadline Manning could have the franchise tag slapped on him in which could be like a one-year nine-twelve million dollar deal
EricIdlefan 02-23-2004, 12:15 AM An Atlanta Falcons player is indicted on cocaine and illiegal weapons in his possession and could face up to ten-to-twenty in prison and the Falcons are talking about dismissing him from tthe team all together
The NFL wants to curb and slow down touchdown celebrations like Terrell Owens TD antics, Joe Horn's celluar phone that has now become infamous, why can't they just do what Marvin Harrison does and just give the football to the ref

That's what I thought. I do not know anything about the deal but my thought is the Skins will be able to cut him in a few years before they have to start paying out the higher saleries since there are usually no gauranteed contracts.
EricIdlefan 02-23-2004, 09:58 PM Jay Fieldler's days with the Dolphins may be over since the Eagles will trade in AJ Feely for him and Feely may be the starting QB despite starting only three or four games when starting Eagles QB Donovan McNabb was hurt
Some of the NFL players are following Maurice Clarett's lead and leaving college early much less to the chargin of veteran NFL players and coaches who think that the college players should have at least three or four years college football experience because they say the NFL is much more dirtier, grittier, and harder
Browns running back William Green will serve a 10-day jail sentence for abusing his common law wife after pleading guilty to abusing his common law wife
Champ Bailey has the franchise and/or transition tag placed on him as he is a free agent and can either sign a deal with other teams(most notably the Lions are very interested in him since his younger brother Boss, who was a rookie last year, plays for the team) or resign but it will cost the Redskins tons and tons of money and to top it all off, a huge signing bonus
EricIdlefan 02-25-2004, 02:24 AM Jevon Kearse is looking to a long term deal if a deal with the Titans is not hammered out but the team won't slap the franchise tag on him claiming it would cost them to pay Kearse aka "The Freak" $6.5 million
Seattle's RB Shaun Alexander is hoping to stay with the Seahawks but sources say that the team and Seahawks personal are hesistant to give him a long term deal as Alexander is one of the best running backs in the NFL like Marshall Faulk and Priest Holmes a combination of rushing and receiving
Joe Gibbs after resigning with the Redskins and also being named President of the team and organization has hired up to fifteen new assisstant coaches in hopes of turning the team back to its glory days because the Redskins have been to the play-offs only once since Gibbs first hung up his long and workaholic habits back in the 1981-1993 season to head up a NASCAR team which has stars Bobby Labonte & Tony Stewart
isiahthomas 02-25-2004, 05:51 PM I heard that Denver's Clinton Portis was traded to Washington for Champ Bailey which is gonna be a big loss for Denver. Earnest Byner who was a former running back for the Cleveland Browns & Washington Redskins is gonna be Joe Gibbs assistant coach. Barry Sanders & John Elway are gonna be inducted in the hall of fame. Barry is a weirdo cause he said he feels like he shouldn't be in the hall of fame. Why not? He was one of the greatest running backs of all time. When i heard him being interviewed awhile back on ESPN, he sounded like a oddball.
isiahthomas 02-25-2004, 06:03 PM The Redskins also cut Bruce Smith & Jessie Armstead. I'm glad Bruce got cut. It was time for him to retire anyway.
EricIdlefan 02-25-2004, 09:18 PM Redskins cut Hall of Future Famer and All-Time Sack Leader Bruce Smith, LB Jessie Armstead, and P Bryan Barker to get under the now $80 million dollar cap
Ravens RB Jamal Smith is facing trouble both on and off the field as he was indicted for drug trafficking and will surrender to the FBI tomorrow and is facing up to ten years behind federal prison as he was one of up to ten-to-twenty people in a group who sold drugs at a house
Clinton Portis could be traded to the Redskins in exchage for Champ Bailey to the Broncos and both team organizations have to shelve out big time money to sign or resign those two.
isiahthomas 02-26-2004, 11:42 AM That's messed up about Jamal Lewis. I heard last night on ESPN that this happened yrs ago when he was in college & they're bringin this up now. People make me sick bringin up old stuff that happened in somebody's past. Oh well Baltimore is gonna lose a good running back. Why are people fascinated with drugs? I know it's big money when you're sellin it but would u rather have your freedom or be locked up when u have no freedom at all? People who sell drugs don't think about what could happen to them when they're sellin it. All they're thinkin about is the money.
EricIdlefan 02-26-2004, 04:50 PM It is sad that Jamal had everything going for him and now this!! When you are a athlete in MLB, NHL, NBA, & NFL you are a role model to kids if you like it or not and he is now up there with Rae Curruth, Pete Rose, Kobe Bryant, Ray Lewis, Jayson Williams
isiahthomas 02-26-2004, 05:03 PM Speaking of Jayson Williams, his prettyboy lookin ass is going to prison LOL. I can't believe he tried to make it look like his limo driver committed suicide when he was the one who killed him all along by mistake. He shouldn't have been playing with a damn shotgun in the first place & showing it off to his guests.
EricIdlefan 02-26-2004, 08:51 PM All the evidence points to Williams as he is playing the either "race card and/or I am innocent until proven guilty!!"
EricIdlefan 02-27-2004, 12:45 AM The Broncos re-signed Al Wilson to a seven-year deal worth $42 million with a $10 million signing bonus
Jamel Lewis entered a plea of not guilty after surrendering to the FBI and went to federal court and paid his bond and is free pending a trial that could send him to federal prison for ten years and the NFL & Ravens don't know what kind of punishmenet to use on their star running back
Looks like Champ Bailey will go to the Broncos and Clinton Portis to the Redskins for a trade and Bailey turned down the Redskins offer of eight years and $55 million with at least a $15-20 million dollar signing bonus
EricIdlefan 03-01-2004, 09:50 PM Clinton Portis signed a eight year deal with the Redskins and is the highest paid RB with $55 million with a signing bonus of $17 million
[color=royalblue]No deal on QB Peyton Manning but the Colts know today is the deadline
Terrell Owens might be let go and the 49ers are also deciding QB Jeff Garcia's fate as well
Buccaneers could let DT Warren Sapp go as a free agent as well
Steelers release LB Dwayne Washington and TE Mark Bruener and RB Jerome Bettis is restructuring his contract to stay with the team
EricIdlefan 03-02-2004, 07:21 PM 49ers let go of three-time pro-bowl QB Jeff Garcia and WR Terrell Owens might be next as his wish to be let go might come true
The Colts have made QB Peyton Manning the richest player in NFL history as he signed a six-year $99.70 million dollar contract with a $34.5 million dollar signing bonus
Bengals coach Marvin Lewis has chosen 2003 Draft Pick Carlson Palmer as the Starting QB over Comeback Player of the Year 2003 Jon Kitna for the 2004 NFL season
RB Clinton Portis has the eight-year $55 millon dollar contract with $18 million dollar signing bonus with the Redskins and CB Champ Bailey could sign a seven year deal of $55 million dollar with $18 million dollar signing bonus for the Broncos
Brian Damage 03-03-2004, 11:34 AM I'd like to know where the Redskins got all this money to sign players considering there is a salary cap?!
EricIdlefan 03-03-2004, 10:16 PM Eagles sign former DE Three-Time Pro-Bowler Jevon "The Freak" Kearse to a eight-year $66 million dollar contract with a $20 million dollar signing bonus
Redskins signed SS Shawn Springs from the Seahawks and Patrick Ramsey and Mark Brunell will battle for the starting QB position
DE Chad Clifton, known for almost having his career threatened after the now infamous Warren Sapp hit stays with the Packers by agreeing to a 5-year $32.45 million dollar contract
Three'sCompanyrules 03-04-2004, 02:05 AM The Redskins also signed former NY Giants DT Cornelious Griffin to a long term deal.

exactly.
EricIdlefan 03-04-2004, 02:28 PM Dan Snyder Reskins Owner must have the cash!!
Three'sCompanyrules 03-04-2004, 04:31 PM Huge news I just saw on nfl.com, that the 49ers have just traded WR, Terrell Owens to the Baltimore Ravens for the Ravens 2nd round draft pick 51st over all.
isiahthomas 03-04-2004, 05:24 PM Jeff Garcia is gonna visit with the Cleveland Browns to see if he can get a spot on their team. I hope the Browns sign him so they can let go of Tim Couch cause the Browns are deciding whether or not to keep Tim.
Brian Damage 03-04-2004, 11:29 PM Originally posted by EricIdlefan

Duh, of course he has the cash. That is not the issue. There is a thing called a salary cap that is supposed to balance out team spending.
EricIdlefan 03-05-2004, 12:18 AM Terrell Owens will be with the Ravens since they need a receiver since TE Todd Heap is the go-to-guy. After signing a six-year deal with the 49ers the Ravens will honor Owens three years left that will pay him $17 million
Redskins SS Shawn Springs, late of the Seahawks will have a five year $25 million dollar deal with a $10 million dollar signing bonus
The Bucs know they have a lot to loose if DE Warren Sapp which last season was in the final year of his six-year contract worth $36 million could be shopping elsewhere because Sapp is worth more than his $36 million
Keyshawn Johnson will sign a $25 million 5-year deal with the Cowboys as WR Joey Galloway has refused to take a pay cut and could be traded and has been a somewhat disappoinment ever since signing an eight-year contract in 2000 with the Cowbys worth $55 million
Mr. Television 03-05-2004, 12:31 AM WBAL TV in Baltimore is reporting that Warren Sapp may be close to signing with the Ravens.

Cowboys who are looking to trade WR Joey Galloway have hit a dead end so far and looks like they are going to take Bucs Keyshawn Johnson
Falcons get Jason Webster after Webster signed a six-year $13 million deal with a $7 million bonus
EricIdlefan 03-07-2004, 04:36 PM Browns Tim Couch refuse to restructure his contract and could either be cut or traded and Jeff Garcia is visiting with the Browns and either could be the back-up if Couch is the starting QB or the starter if signed
The Redskins have shelved over $50 million in bonus money
Titans WR Drew Bennett has signed a three-year deal to stay with the team and DT Brad Hopkins signed a six-year $35 million dollar deal with bonus money of $12 million
EricIdlefan 03-09-2004, 01:26 AM Jeff Garcia has signed a three-year deal with the Buccaneers and that means he will compete with Brad Johnson for the starting QB after Shaun King left to be with the Cardinals
Redskins might also have to shelve more bonus money since they already have over $50 million in bonus money so far and lead the league
Jets WR Justin McCarreans inked a seven year $31 million dollar deal with $7 million in signing bonuses
The Joey Galloway-Keyshawn Johnson trade deal has it a stumbling block because Galloway will not restructure his contract meaning that Johnson has to wait a little longer to sign a five-year deal with the Cowboys worth $25 million dollars with a $10 million dollar signing bonus
Mr. Television 03-09-2004, 01:30 AM The Redskins keep spending and the Cowboys have to wait on Galloway. They didn't get their money's worth on him and now they are going to spend more money on a high profile WR. Jerry: We need a qb and a rb.

Unless he is fully recovered they should go after Kurt Warner because Marc Bulger is likely to get a huge contract for the Rams!!
EricIdlefan 03-10-2004, 12:34 AM Oakland RB Charlie Garner agreed to a four-year deal to the Bucs and will reunite him with former Raiders turned Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden
Mistake: Said QB Jeff Garcia is going to the Buccaneers now he is a Browns so Brad Johnson can rest assured the Bucs Starting QB position is all his to lose. Garcia, BTW, signed a four-year $25 million dollar deal meaning Tim Couch's five year rocky era with the team is now officially over.
DT Warren Sapp might not come back to the Bucs and is testing the free agent mark and would become one of the highest paid if not the highest paid DT ever
Titans WR Drew Bennett has agreed to stay with the team as WR with him being #2 with star receiver Derrick Mason to a three-year deal worth $6 million.
EricIdlefan 03-10-2004, 10:32 PM Rams DE Grant Wistrom agrees to a Seahawks contract of six years $33 million with a $14 million in signing bonus

Patriots star Saftey Ty Law says that the team has denied him the remaining other money on the seven year $51 million dollar contract with a then-record bonus of $14.2 million saying that he was denied most of it and would be playing for less he was told, the Patriots, BTW, neither confirm nor deny his comments

Kurt Warner could be released by the Rams after two injured seasons and it has been reported that Warner has lost respect by his teammates but Warner is denying that "God had anything to do with him speaking out on the matter of th Rams losing hope in him" and it has been reported that Warner and head coach Mike Martz aren't seeing eye-to-eye with each other but both deny that there is a rift.
Peyton Manning's brother Eli Manning has had over twenty teams doing their best to draft him. Among other teams Chargers, Browns, Cowboys(which they deny but are sticking to either Quincy Carter or Drew Henson).
EricIdlefan 03-31-2004, 07:48 PM There will be fifteen yard penalty for excessive celebration td dances like Terrell Owen's pulling the pen out of his sock and autographing a football, Joe Horn's cellphone celebration, and/or even David Carr's "pretend to imitate Horn's" cellphone and the player's wallets will become "less heavier",
DE Levar Arrington, is trying to bury the hatchet, in his relationship with flambroylent owner, Redskins Dan Snyder, whom Arrington is accusing of not giving him the "money he has been promised on his bonus money", half of the $16 million due him when he signed a eight year contract last December worth $60 million.

Despite his three World champion titles and his known "old-school" routine, Redskins coach Joe Gibbs feels he has to start all over again when he left to pursue both NASCAR and a broadcasting career since the team has only made the playoffs once after Gibbs left on top in 1992. Speaking of the Giants, the team has had a "friendly but platonic relationship" with aka "drill seargent" coach Tom Coughlin and admire his will to look for ways to win. The Jaguars seemed to tire of his wanting the players to act more like soldiers instead of players.

Testaverde has been named the starting QB by Bill Parcells.
Though I did read about Carter supposedly failing a drug test, I did not see cocaine mentioned.
Parcells and Jones mentioned that Carter would be elligible to play for another team, so the drug violation seems to be not a suspension level infraction.
If he is elligible to play for another team, I don't understand why the Cowboys didn't try to trade him- for whatever they could get.

They need to search the free agent market and bring in another veteran QB, so that it would take the much of the pressure off the inexperienced backups if Vinny happened to miss some playing time.
