View Full Version : Good Times Video Lucy 8 Pack DVD
Larry Surrell 02-21-2004, 09:37 PM Apologies if this has been discussed before, I haven't been around here very long yet. :o
I happened to spot a DVD set at my local Sam's Club. Funny, they only had one copy and it was mixed in with the software, not where the rest of the DVDs are. I'm glad I spotted it!
I'm sure many of you have these DVDs already or at least know about them, but for those who dunt, they include a Lucy-Desi Playhouse special for Westinghouse salesmen and CBS affiliates where they give a Westinghouse rep a tour of Desilu studios. This alone was worth the $18.72 cost of the box set for me, but there's more! It also includes a Bob Hope special from October 1956, where Bob plays Ricky and Desi plays Fred in an I Love Lucy sketch (which I found very funny), two DVDs of Lucy and Desi on the Ed Sullivan show Toast of the Town (I haven't watched those yet, but am anxious to see both of them) and another DVD includes my favorite Lucy Show episode, The Plumber.
Good Times Video cheats a bit with one DVD, it's called Lucy's Lost Episodes and it's a compilation of most of the stuff on the other DVDs. They also have two DVDs named The Funny World of Lucy volumes 1 and 2. Frankly, I could have done without those too. If I'm going to watch Lucy, I want to see the whole show, not just bits and pieces of her performances (I'd love to see the entire tape of Wildcat, for example).
If you spot a copy at Sam's Club, I recomment that you grab it. If you're a Lucy-Desi fan you won't be disappointed!
dawsongirl 02-22-2004, 01:31 AM Sam's Club can be a real mess sometimes.
I have most of those...I think...on tape. But DVD is a much more lasting format. Are there any extras? Because I could just put them on DVD myself and save the money.
x1LucyFanx 02-22-2004, 04:14 PM I saw those at an FYE music store and I wanted them soOo bad...I asked for them for X-Mas but I didn't get them and come to find out they were sold before my mom could get them!! :(
Larry Surrell 02-22-2004, 04:42 PM So far there's no bonus footage and I haven't found any easter eggs on any of the DVDs, so you're not missing anything by burning your own DVD-Rs from the tapes. I'm watching the first Ed Sullivan DVD as I'm typing this; Desi just finished singing Babaloo! I had some trouble getting this DVD to play. I had to insert it into my DVD player about 5 times before the main menu would come up, but I haven't had that problem with any of the others in the set yet. The only thing that bothers me about these DVDs is there's a GT bug in the lower right corner of the video on everything the whole time they're playing. I could have done without that!
x1LucyFanx, I hope you can find these again, I'm sure you'll enjoy them!
Lodee 02-24-2004, 04:55 PM I saw this at our Sam's club too. :) (didn't buy it though)
Larry, did you watch the second Ed Sullivan DVD that came with it? If you did can you tell me what was on it? Thanks........:)
SPLAIN 02-25-2004, 10:38 AM The copy you got Laura was THE FULL VERSION, did you like it?
Lodee 02-25-2004, 11:50 AM I loved it! I loved the Dean Martin roast and the Tangible episode too. Thank you. ........and I liked Lucy Gets Lucky. :) That cracked me up hw Ed Sullivan advertised those cars so seriously back then though, and the contestants on I've Got a Secret got a carton of cigarettes as a prize.
Larry said on his DVD's that he had 2 Ed Sullivan DVD's. I was wondering what was on the second one. :)
Did you get your tape yet? Part of what you put on my tape at the end was from the tape I made for you so I'm thinking maybe you had it already and I was sending you a duplicate. :(
SPLAIN 02-25-2004, 12:29 PM Those OLD things were often duplicated on many tapes. The second Sullivan thing is that Forever Darling plug, where she drops the film and does that Irving Ames brother routine. Nope, never got your tape. Yes the carton of ciggies cracked me up also, and the small money amounts. As for the Ed Sullivan tribute, they should have asked Ed to move out of there to do that car plug, it was uncomfortable for Lucy and Desi. Tangible was a riot all right, how about that LOOSE remark from her old college boyfriend? I swear that was the only thing i enjoyed on that whole roast, well i mean after repeated viewings. Did you see the look she gives BEFORE it turns to laughter????? It gives new meaning to the term IF LOOKS COULD KILL, sorta like that look she gives Don Rickles because she was so terrified of what he'd say! He was the Joan Rivers of his day! LOL!
Lodee 02-25-2004, 12:50 PM Wasn't the old boyfriend Foster Brooks?!?
SPLAIN 02-25-2004, 02:08 PM Yes, he always played his drunk character on the Dean martin roasts, and besides he had done a Here's Lucy also, as many other guests had. But he certainly had the best line of the entire show!
Larry Surrell 02-28-2004, 10:46 AM I'm sorry Lodee, I hadn't looked at this thread in a few days and didn't know you asked me a question.
I haven't watched the second Ed Sullivan DVD yet (will probably tonight), but from the info on the box Splain is correct. Lucy and Desi are promoting Forever Darling.
If I have more to add after watching it I'll let you know!
Kazza 02-28-2004, 11:40 AM The second Sullivan apperance is not as good as the first one. It's got a sketch by Orson Wells at the end which is boring. I just got it because I was curious but not because I like it a lot

Thanks Larry. :)
Desilover, did you bu the second Ed Sullivan DVD separately, or was it part of the set that Larry has?

I bought it separately:talk:
Lodee 03-01-2004, 04:16 PM Is it short? And is the Toast of the Town one short? I mean like an hour or so?

They are about 1hr long each BUT the Lucy Desi segments are not the whole hour; except for the Toast of the Town one (Desi's speech) where more time is dedicated to them

That's always shocking to watch. On the old game show Two for the Money, first thing they asked you was "Regular or King Sized?" and then gave you a carton of Old Gold's.

 He was the "old boyfriend" on Betty White's roast too!
SPLAIN 03-02-2004, 10:47 AM I'll bet he was the drunk beau also!

The whole DVD is only an hour? I wonder why they didn't just put them on one?
paterdpt 03-11-2004, 05:21 PM Hi, I'm new here. What a great place! I just bought that DVD set at Sam's Club, haven't watched them yet. Anyway, I thought it looked similar to LucyMania so I wasn't going to buy the LucyMania VHS tapes that I saw on Ebay. Should I go ahead and buy those, are they different from these? Thanks for any help.
SPLAIN 03-12-2004, 11:18 AM Lodee made me a copy of some of those and i found them terrific, watch them a lot, it's the earlier stuff and some things like a number Lucy did on the Steve Lawrence show is so much clearer than the bad copy of a copy i already had, it's Lucy and Steve singing Hey Look Me Over together and that alone would be worth it for me, it was her signature song from Wildcat and you so seldom see her performing it. Danny Kaye did it on The Lucy show one time. HEY PAT, WELCOME TO THIS GREAT SITE, SO GREAT TO HAVE YOU HERE. PAT IS ONE OF THE NICEST PEOPLE AROUND THE BOARDS, BUT SHE SO SELDOM FINDS TIME TO POST. Don't you just hate these people who actually HAVE A LIFE? lol! Don't forget the OTHER sites too Pat, you're a welcome asset to all of them.
paterdpt 03-15-2004, 02:57 PM Claude, you are too kind! I don't really have a life, just have to do a little work while I'm at work!
SPLAIN 03-15-2004, 03:30 PM Thank God after 30 years my job does itself, so that leaves me some free time between phone calls, i used to get upset waiting for people to answer, now i hope they don't, so i can post more. Pat don't forget The Lucy Lounge, many people there remember you very well from Lucy Talk and they'd also like to see you posting again! Pat used to kill me, she practucally lived in the collectible section, just how big is your collection Pat?
paterdpt 03-17-2004, 10:55 AM Actually I don't have a big collection, I collect so many other things (old Barbies, quilts, and more!) that I'm running out of room! I just hope we find a different house soon so I can display my stuff, right now everything is packed away.
SPLAIN 03-17-2004, 11:10 AM Oh no, that's terrible, collections are to enjoy, not to be packed away, display everything so you can get more enjoyment out of everything.
