View Full Version : "portrait of maddie"
"now i know how a jehova's witness feels"
"the wonder years" star, dan lauria, stars as a cop investigating the deaths of two brothers, that both died over a portrait of maddie. as the story goes, the portrait is really a guide to a real treasure, "the duchess", a stolen painting from three years earlier.
after finding the stolen article, dave and maddie find out that the cop wants it for himself. he chases them with a gun into an auto paint garage before getting caught by a shelf full of falling paint cans.
an enjoyable episode. keeps ya wondering why a stranger with a fascination for maddie paints her portrait without her knowing about it.

david&maddie4ever 02-22-2004, 10:50 PM Did this episode have a scene at the end where they figure out where the painting is by looking in a mirror or something? If so, I liked this episode a lot...especially that part. :D
yeah, maddie figured out by the reflection in the mirror when she was about the same distance from the mirror as in the painting. the big arrow from the sign pointed to the gutter where it was hidden.
Dutchie 07-11-2004, 09:04 AM OMG!! I loved this episode!!! I only saw it once and that was more than a year ago...
There is a scene from Portrait of Maddie that I like a lot, you can find it on this page of D&M.com

CindyK 07-11-2004, 09:56 AM Yes, Steph. I love the opening scene between David and Maddie as they celebrate their first real profits in the company. It is cute, funny, flirty, and sets up one of the underlying conflicts of propriety and acceptable sexual behavior in society. And this I think ties in rather subtly the connection between the title of the episode and Henry James novel "The Portrait of a Lady."
That novel, if you have read it, examines ideals of propriety, society, marriage, etc by studying closely the words and behaviors of a young society woman who tries to flaunt her freedom in the face of what she considers restraint. Anyway, this isn't the place for a long literary discussion, but I do so enjoy applying the title references to the episodes.
I too enjoy the scenes with Maddie and David tied up in the artist's loft.... Maddie's slithering, David's admiration of her, and then the location of the painting and the paint fight. This is a really good episode to me.
Tazmania 07-11-2004, 11:24 AM I think the end of this eposode says enough.
M:"Could you tell me again about the poor slobs who live for me?"
D:"If you keep wearing that much make up they're gonna lose interest"
Then Madiie gives him an airkiss with her lips!!
Ooooooh I loved that!!
This episode has a very romantic touch, and very good humor.

Hey, Steph.
Did you try to resize the pic? I was just wondering, because SO only accepts avatar pictures that are under 150x150 pixels.

Dutchie 07-17-2004, 10:31 AM I like the part where paint falls over Maddie her head!
Maddie: "Why do I always get dirty on a case." (or something like that)
and then David get's covered in paint LMAO!!:D
Tazmania 07-17-2004, 12:17 PM And what do we think about the portrait?
Does it look like her?
CindyK 07-17-2004, 04:57 PM The painting's not bad....
I think it reminds me of this pose somewhat of Cybill

Dutchie 07-17-2004, 05:15 PM The painting looks like Cybill in my avatar:)
Tazmania 07-17-2004, 05:58 PM Yeah Steph it looks like your avatar
david&maddie4ever 07-18-2004, 02:38 PM For some reason, the painting of Mads always scared me a bit. That whole scene scared me. :o
Tazmania 07-18-2004, 03:20 PM Why Lauren?
CindyK 07-18-2004, 03:46 PM it is rather eerie.... the music really sets this mood.
But knowing that the storyline to some extent is to resemble the classic film Laura, whereby a man does fall in love with a painting of a woman and the whole story is centered around a murder...then I believe you were to get an unsettled or eerie feeling about it.
At the point in the episode when Maddie sits studying the painting, one can't help but feel rather creepy since the idea of someone painting her like that and killing themselves is a deranged and obsessive act.
The music just hammers this all home.

:yeahthat :D
And wasn't there also a point in the story where they found a crapload of Maddie's old modeling pictures in the guy's apartment? :eek3: Creepy stuff.
Tazmania 07-18-2004, 06:15 PM Yeah that looked like the guy was really obsessed with her.
Maybe this story was based on a true story about Cyb.
Who knows, that maybe some guy would do that in real life.
Yuk, creepy thought!

I just remember that one scene where it's really dark and they find all those pictures everywhere...ooooh, I was freaking out. :lookaroun
Tazmania 07-18-2004, 06:28 PM Yeah such a shame that guy had all those pictures!
They could have been mine! Would be great for posting!
LOL:grineyes:

Carina13 07-30-2004, 06:24 PM I think the portrait was OK, but not great. Yeah, it looks like Cyb in Cindy's picture and in Steph's avatar, but it could have been better. Anyway, that's not important. The important thing is the episode, and I think it was great.
But then, like u said, it was kinda scary when the show us all this pictures of Cybill in the guy's room. But Maddie seemed to be kinda touched about it, don't you think? She was feeling odd, but at the same time it wasn't such an unpleasent feeling. She felt curiosity about this guy and how much he "admired" her... I don't know, I would have been scared to death if it had happened to me.

Hey, Carina. It's been kinda dead around here ever since Taz left.
I agree...I found it very odd that Mads didn't seem too creeped out by the whole situation. I probably would've locked myself in my bathroom until the guy was caught and put behind bars. :o
Carina13 08-01-2004, 03:56 PM Yeah, that's exactly what I mean, Lauren. I would be very scared too.
BTW... you're right!!! We need Taz over here!!!! hahahaha

Well, at least Taz will be happy when she finds out we can't keep the board going without her. ohno:
Tazmania 08-03-2004, 11:19 AM Thanx guys!! I'm flattered!! And I'm back!
But I see you did a good job yourselves without me!
It's so funny to see how much has been posted here and on Cyb's site!
Tonight I'm gonna check BW but now I have to do my vacation laundry! LOL LOL
I had a great time in Portugal and got a real nice tan!
marla 09-30-2004, 06:06 PM i think this episode is perfect for a rainy night, snuggled up on the couch. it's a good mystery, is creepy, and yet ends happy-bedtime!
it showed maddie and david characterizations in extremes.
maddie takes things so seriously and david is very comical, especially the facial expression on his face when he's looking out the window at the arrow.
i loved it when she snapped out of it and blew david a kiss at the end. a nice, grownup thank you.
IheartMoonlighting 10-01-2004, 02:00 AM This is one of my favorite episodes.
MulberryGal 10-13-2004, 02:14 PM Just seen this one for the first time. What a great ep.. Seems my favourite scenes are the same as everyone elses!! The bit at the beginning when Dave has his hand on Maddie's behind!!! And of course the lovely ending when Maddie blows him a kisss...
Aaah! :D
Mul
Tazmania 10-13-2004, 03:51 PM Yes Mul it's one of my favourites too, they are really lovely with eachother.
Also like the part when she bought the painting and Dave asks her what kind of "thing" it is and she says "a pretty thing".
The end is fabulous with the airkiss....
Oh and btw I think I said it before but I think it was a very good painting.
 taz
I've just seen this one for the 1st time too and its really good.
Loads of funny  bits - "is that my hand" etc, the slithering and the paint.
Its great how Maddie is flattered by the painting and apparent obsession with her but then by the end she realises that her friends "the poor slobs who live for her" are what really matter.
And that cute kiss at the end ...:)
laura a 07-06-2007, 01:46 PM Jeez i had to go back abit to find this thread!
Anyway the reason for that is because i have nothing else to do this evening so i thought i would post that 'naughty' picture of David with his hand on Maddies behind.
You know , the one that the network said was too risque` to screen.
Well i think we`re all adults here:lol: so here it is.

Great pic!
I find it interesting to see the difference 20 years have made in the TV standards here in the U.S. Now, you can say and do just about anything. There is so much sex talk/jokes that I think we have gone overboard! I don't watch sitcoms anymore because they all have the same lame sex jokes over and over again. I miss the great writing - you know, the kind of writing that Moonlighting had. Most TV these days simply bores me -- except C.S.I. Las Vegas - that show has great chemistry between all of the characters.
laura a 07-12-2007, 02:05 PM I know it makes me kinda laugh too , i mean compared to todays standards it is very tame. Thats why it`s a little sad theycan`t do it all over againwith Bruce and Cybill) just imagine what Glenn could get away with now! but very tastefully done though
Moonlighting was just born too soon for it`s time.
