The idea of a TV baby whose thoughts could be heard was at least as old as the 1960 series Happy. Television had made progress in thirty years, however, as this time all the babies could be making unspoken wisecracks. In the Spring 1991 version, harried young single mom Maggie and infant Mickey lived in a Manhattan loft that was still under construction. Joe, Fogarty, and Howard were the incompetent construction workers who were always underfoot. By the fall, Maggie (now played by Mary Page Keller) had moved to an apartment in nearby, trendy Brooklyn Heights, where fun-loving young superintendent James, an aspiring songwriter, became her special friend. Also joining the cast in the fall were Doris, he meddling mom; Susan, a friend and co-worker at the accounting office where she worked; and Anita, a neighbor with a talkative infant of her own.
Nothing seemed to deter ABC from trying to make this inane sitcom a success. Not the fact that two leading ladies quit in the first six months (Connie Sellecca before it even premiered, and Julia Duffy at the end of the Spring 1991 run). Not the fact that gimmicky movies (in this case 1989's Look Who's Talking) hardly ever become successful TV series. And certainly not the fact that Baby Talk was voted the dubious honor of "Worst Series on Television" in the 1991 Electronic Media critics' poll.
