The Sanford Arms aired from September until October 1977 on NBC.
In 1977 NBC's highly successful comedy Sanford and Son lost both of its stars-Redd Foxx to a variety series of his own on ABC and Demond Wilson because the producers would not meet his salary demands. With most of the supporting players still around, however, The Sanford Arms took its place. The new lead character was Phil Wheeler ( Theodore Wilson), a widower with two teenage children Angie and Nat ( Tina Andrews, John Earl). He had made a down payment on the entire Sanford property-house, junkyard and rooming house-and attempted to turn the latter into a successful residential hotel. With Fred and Lamont Sanford having moved to Arizona where the weather was better for Fred's health, Aunt Esther ( LaWanda Page) was left to watch over the property and collect the monthly mortgage payments. Also carried over from the Sanford and Son cast of characters were Esther's husband Woody ( Raymond Allen), Fred's friend Grady ( Whitman Mayo), who had married Dolly (Norma Miller), and Bubba ( Don Bexley), who worked at the Sanford Arms as both bellboy and maintenance man. Newcomers to the cast in addition to Phil Wheeler and his children was his girlfriend Jeannie (Bebe Drake -Hooks).
If anything proved more difficult than getting customers for the hotel, it was finding an audience for the series. The attempt to salvage the series without its two departed stars was a total failure and it lasted less than a month. The Sanford Arms ended up being ranked dead last among all TV shows for the 1977-1978 season.
Bud Yorkin, Bernie Orenstein and Saul Turteltaub were the executive producers of The Sanford Arms and Woody Kling was its producer.
