Turnabout aired from January until March 1979 on NBC.
Everyone has at one time or another, wished that they could change places with somebody else, and lead that other person's life. That was the wish that got Sam and Penny Alston ( John Schuck, Sharon Gless)into so much trouble. Over Sam's objections , Penny had purchased a small Buddha-like statue from a gypsey who claimed it had magic powers. Later, in a moment of boredom, the couple chanced to wish they could change places with each other -voila! the statue granted them their wish. While they slept, Sam's spirit moved into Penny's body and vice versa. Finding out the next morning that they had exchanged bodies was quite a shock- and that was only the beginning.Trying to maintain the illusion of normalcy, until they could get the statue to switch them back to their own bodies was not easy. Sam ( in Penny's body) had to learn all about the cosmetics industry, since she was an executive working for Geoffrey St. James ( James Sikking); and Penny ( in Sam's body) had to act the part of a gruff sportswriter to deal with boss Al Brennan ( Bruce Kirby). They also had personal habits and gestures that seemed inappropriate in their new bodies. Sam liked to smoke cigars and Penny was very dainty among other things. The people most likely to notice the sudden "turnabout" were their nosy neighbors , Jack and Judy Overmeyer ( Richard Stahl, Bobbi Jordan).
Based on the novel by Thorne Smith, who was also the author of the books on which another whimsical series, Topper, was based. The novel was also made into a movie in 1940.
