The Stockard Channing Show aired from March until June 1980 on CBS.
This series was CBS' second attempt in less than a year to make a star out of Stockard Channing. The first venture, Stockard Channing in Just Friends had cast the actress as a recently divorced woman working at a Beverly Hills health spa. This series cast her as a recently divorced woman working for a consumer advocate at a Los Angeles television station. Susan Goodenow ( Channing) had landed her job working for egotistical crusader Brad Gabriel ( Ron Silver) because her friend Erline ( Sydney Goldsmith,) was a secretary at the station that aired Brad's program, "The Big Rip-Off." Mr. Clyde ( Max Showalter) was the general manager of the station, which was owned by his wife. Mr. Kramer ( Jack Somack) was the owner of the old apartment building in West Hollywood where Susan and Erline lived. His fatherly interest in Susan compensated for a notable lack of skill as a handyman.
There were many similarities between this series and Stockard Channing's previous effort. In both shows she was named Susan, she had recently ended a marriage, she was starting a new job in Los Angeles , and her friend and coworker was played by Sydney Goldsmith. The most telling similarity however, was that neither show lasted more than a few months. CBS did not try again.
