Occasional Wife aired from September 1966 until August 1967 on NBC.
Peter Christopher ( Michael Callan) was a young executive at the Brahms Baby Food Company whose single status had prevented him from getting numerous promotions. Due to the nature of it's product, The Brahms Company was a strong believer in marriage and family. Peter hit upon the idea of having someone pose as his wife, whenever his boss was around, so that he could move up in the company and still retain his bachelor status. To that end he convinced Gretta Patterson ( Patricia Harty), an aspiring young painter who was temporarily working as a hat-check girl to take the " job" of his " occasional wife." In return, he set her up in an apartment two floors above his and agreed to pay for her art lessons and a pair of contact lenses. She had to be in his apartment whenever his boss , Max Brahms ( Jack Collins) dropped by and appear at his office from time to time, as well as attend company functions with him.
The problems caused by this arrangement, which often saw one or both of them on the fire escape between their apartments, provided most of the material for episodes. The poor man ( Bryan O'Byrne),who lived in the apartment between them , and was often witness to the constant trafic on the fire escape , remained totally confussed by the goings-on.
Others in the cast included Joan Tompkins as Mrs. Brahm; Sara Seeger as Peter's mother, Mrs. Christopher; Stuart Margolin as Bernie; Jack Riley as Wally Frick; Susan Silo as Vern; and Chris Noel as Marilyn. Sportscaster Vin Scully served as narrator for the series, commenting on the increasingly complicated problems created by the arrangement between Peter and Greta.
In real-life Michael Callan and Patricia Harty fell in love and were married during the show's run. They were subsequently divorced. In 1983 they were recast in an unsuccessful sitcom pilot, " Young Hearts" as parents.
