Free Spirit aired from September 1989 until January 1990 on ABC.
This short-lived sitcom was An updated version of the 1970 sitcom, Nanny And The Professor. It asked the question Did you ever wish for a special friend? Feeling neglected by his busy father, 10 year old Gene ( Edan Gross) did- and up popped a young, pretty witch, assigned by the boss warlock in the sky.Winnie ( Corinne Bohrer), looked like a refugee from the '60's, with her long stringy hair and funky clothes but she was just what the Harpers needed. To single Dad Thomas ( Frank Luz), a divorced attorney who worked out of their Connecticut home , she was the slightly off-center housekeeper. Only the kids knew she had magical powers. The other kids were Robb age 16 ( Paul Scherrer) and Jessie age 13 ( Alyson Hannigan). Need an egg for breakfast? poof-there's a bunch of hens cackling in the kitchen cabinet. Can't get tickets to a rock concert? Poof-two tickets pop up in the toaster. Does Jessie's date act like a cad? Poof-he's a monkey.
The family was originally to have been called The Haggarty's, but the surname was changed to Harper after production had started. The switch thus gave ABC the odd distinction of having 2 new sitcoms on its fall schedule with families named Harper ( Homeroom featuring a black Harper family was the other); both flopped.
