My Secret Identity aired from October 1988 until September 1991 in first run syndication.
This series was the ideal vehical to attract a young audience of daydreamers. Andrew Clements ( Jerry O'Connell) was a teenager who had been exposed to radiation from an experiment conducted by his brilliant but eccentric ( is their any other kind?) scientist neighbor , Dr. Benjamin Jeffcoate ( Derek McGrath). The exposure left Andrew with a number of comic-book superhero powers-he was superfast, superstrong, impervious to injury and able to fly ( albeit slowly with the aid of a couple of aerosol cans). In his diary, Andrew dubbed his alter ego " Ultraman," although he had no costume and did his superdeeds in street clothes when nobody could see him. Only his buddy Dr. Jeffcoate, who was always working on some brilliant new invention , knew about Andrew's powers. Dr. Jeffcoate was constantly reminding Andrew to only use his powers for good and not to take advantage of them. Despite being a " normal" student at Briarwood High School, in Briarwood, North Dakota, Andrew did have occasion to thwart criminals , embarrass bullies, and bail out Dr. Jeffcoate whenever one of his inventions went haywire. Andrew's widowed mother Stephanie ( Wanda Cannon), who sold real estate , and his kid sister Erin ( Marsha Moreau) were unaware of his " secret identity."
Over time, the focus of the series shifted from Andrew's superpowers to more traditional personal relationships. High School life and particularly Andrew's buddy Kirk ( Christopher Bolton), became more prominent, as did Dr. Jeffcoate's relationship with Mrs. Clements, to whom he was increasingly attracted, and his pushy neighbor Mrs. Shellenbach (Elizabeth Leslie).
