Joe & Valerie aired from April 1978 until January 1979 on NBC.
Young love and its pitfalls was the theme of this comedy series, which attempted to cash in on the disco craze of the late 1970's. Joe and Valerie( Paul Regina, Char Fontane), had fallen in love at a New York City Disco, but theirs was still a probing, tentative, teenage affair, which was constantly being upset by their nutty friends. Joe shared an apartment with the macho Frankie ( Bill Beyers and later Lloyd Alann), who worked at a health spa, and simpleminded Paulie( David Elliott), who drove a hearst for a living. Valerie lived at home with her divorced mother, Stella ( Pat Benson and later Arlene Golonka). Thelma ( Donna Ponterotto), was Valerie's man-hungry best friend. By day Joe worked at his father Vincent Pizo's ( Robert Costanzo's), plumbing store and Valerie was a clerk at a cosmetics counter, but by night when they met on the disco's gliterring dance floor, they were Cinderella and her Prince Charming.
The series aired brieftly in the spring of 1978 and then returned with new episodes for a few weeks the following January. During the January 1979 run, Joe and Valerie got married.
In a sad bit of news, both stars died relatively young of cancer. Paul Regina died of Liver cancer on January 31, 2006 and Char Fontane died of breast cancer on April 1, 2007.
