Holding The Baby aired from August until December 1998 on FOX.

Gordon ( Jon Patrick Walker), was a workaholic account executive at Los Angeles Consulting Group, whose wife Michelle had run off to Tibet with another man at the same time that their nanny quit-literally leaving him " holding the baby" ( his infant son Daniel played by Carter and Jordan Kemp). Thinking that Kelly ( Jennifer Westfeldt), a pretty young U.C.L.A. grad student who had applied for a receptionist job at his company, would make a perfect nanny, he offered her twice as much as that job paid ( $12 an hour) to become Daniel's nanny. Despite Misgivings, Kelly took the gig. Jimmy ( Eddie McClintock), was Gordon's womanizing brother, an unemployed actor who lived with him. Miss Boggs ( Sherri Shephard), was Gordon's sassy secretary, and Stan ( Ron Liebman), his demanding boss. Stories revolved around Gordon's problems balancing his responsibilities at work with the needs of his infant son and the complications that arose when he started dating again.

Nobody is laughing at the Fox network -- both on the air and in its office suites. Four of the five live-action comedies on Fox's schedule drew anemic ratings and Fox's patience ran out quickly.

The network has taken a meat ax to its comedy lineup, knocking the four comedies off the air. Yesterday ''Holding the Baby'' was the latest to make the hit list (that's hit as the Mafia, not Nielsen, defines it). On Monday, Fox dropped both its Friday comedies, ''Living in Captivity'' and ''Getting Personal.'' Last week ''Costello'' was the first show on any network canceled this season.

''Getting Personal'' is the only one of the three comedies bounced this week to get an official cancellation notice. The other two will stay in production, though Fox had no idea when they would return. No other network has removed shows from its schedule this season.

The moves leave only ''That 70's Show'' in the crop of live-action comedies on Fox's schedule as it heads into the November sweep month in just a few weeks.

Fox will replace the Friday comedies by rearranging its plans for a drama series called ''Brimstone,'' originally set for Tuesday nights at 9. Fox will now run the show on Friday nights at 8, starting on Oct. 23. The network has ordered new episodes of its summer series ''Guinness Book of World Records'' to fill the spot on Tuesday nights at 9.

Fox will count on football overruns and perhaps some double episodes of its Sunday series ''World's Funniest'' to fill the gap left on Sunday by the shelving of ''Holding the Baby.'' BILL CARTER
