The Headmaster aired from September 1970 until September 1971 on CBS.
Andy Griffith returned to television in this low-key half-hour comedy-drama. He played Andy Thompson, the Headmaster of the Concord School, a private high school with high academic standards. His wife, Margaret ( Claudette Nevins), was one of the school's English teachers and his best friend Jerry Brownell ( Jerry Van Dyke), was the physical educatian teacher and coach. Mr. Purdy ( Parker Fennelly) was the custodian and Judy ( Lani O'Grady), was one of the students. Andy's professional life at the school, dealing with the problems of teachers and students provided the central focus of this folksy series.
Andy Griffith's past television success had been in a very different country-boy role, and the viewing audience did not accept him in this more dignafied dramatic setting. In January 1971 he tried to revert to his early type of portayal on a series called The New Andy Griffith Show, but that too proved unsuccessful and reruns of The Headmaster returned to the time slot in June.
The Headmaster's Theme " Only A Man" was sung by a then little known vocalist named Linda Ronstadt.
