Poster: Stuck In The '70's  (see this users gallery)

Head Over Heels aired from August until December 1997 on UPN.

Head Over Heels was a video dating service in the trendy South Beach section of Miami Beach. It was owned and operated by the Baldwin Brothers. Jack ( Peter Dobson), the free-spirited womanizer, was certainly not a poster boy for a service that purported to promote true romance ( he regularly hit on the more attractive lonely women who came to Head Over Heels in search of love). Warren ( Mitchell Whitfield), the serious businessman, was recovering from the latest in a long line of failed relationships. Working for them were Ian ( Patrick Bristow), a neurotic romance advisor who had taken a vow of celibicy; Carmen ( Eve LaRue), a fellow advisor working on a PH.D in human behavior and sexuality; and Valentina ( Cindy Ambuehl), the bimbo who happened to be a computer whiz hired as their office manager. Also seen were Nikki ( Heidi Mark), Warren's sexy new girlfriend, and Fred ( Kevin Farley), a fat client who had little success with women.

A Review from Variety

Head Over Heels
(Tues. (26); 9:30-10 p.m.; UPN)
By ADAM SANDLER

Taped in Los Angeles by Montrose Prods. in assn. with Jeff Franklin Prods. and Columbia TriStar TV. Executive producer, Jeff Franklin; producer, Pamela Putch; co-producer, Andrew Gottlieb; consulting producers, Vince Cheung, Ben Montanio; director, Matthew Diamond; writer, Jeff Franklin.

Cast: Peter Dobson, Mitchell Whitfield, Cindy Ambuehl, Eva Larue, Patrick Bristow.

There are more dim bulbs than an old string of Christmas lights in this latest entry by UPN in the sitcom derby. While its stylish and provocative "Silk Stalkings"-type opening is an eye-catcher, the action that follows the credits is strictly a snoozefest. Even an appearance by Kevin Farley, who mirrors the demeanor of his brother Chris, can't save this effort.
The Head Over Heels dating service is led by two competitive brothers, Jack and Warren Baldwin (Peter Dobson and Mitchell Whitfield, respectively) whose business plan is to "help people find love and make a reasonable profit."

But their efforts are frequently challenged by their own libidos and a staff of dysfunctional "counselors," who include Carmen (Eva LaRue) a Ph.D. candidate working on a doctorate in human behavior and sexuality whose comments unintentionally suggest it is a mail-order course, and Ian (Patrick Bristow), whose grating personality is seemingly exacerbated as a result of his vow of celibacy. Valentina (Cindy Ambuehl) is a stripper-turned-receptionist who is the least knuckleheaded of the group --- a mindless scribe device to conflict with her stunning good looks.

Series bow finds the staff debating the merits of a new policy prohibiting the firm's employees from dating clients. The move is tested when Warren takes up with Nikki (Heidi Mark), the agency's newest --- and presumably most desirable --- client.

Naturally, the policy is abandoned when Jack catches Warren and Nikki in a post-coital afterglow while sitting on the floor of Warren's office.

Between Jack's frequent efforts to pick up on the latest signee (actions which precipitated the unpopular client-dating policy) and the stereotypical swishiness of Ian, who apparently has some underlying issues that will undoubtedly surface in subsequent episodes, scripter Jeff Franklin has given his cast every cliche imaginable to either articulate or act out.

Matthew Diamond's direction appears to be little more than instructing his cast to respond to everything in the fashion of Sherman Hemsley's excitable George Jefferson.

For Gorgeous Lonelyhearts A Dating Service Sitcom
'Head Over Heels'
UPN, tomorrow night at 10

Apparently, in South Beach, Miami's trendiest neighborhood, herds of stunningly beautiful supermodels are staying home alone on Saturday nights, wishing they could meet nice guys. Several of them turn up tomorrow night at the namesake video-dating service of ''Head Over Heels,'' a new UPN sitcom.

The female employees of Head Over Heels are beautiful, too: Carmen (Eva LaRue), a graduate student in human sexuality, and Valentina (Cindy Ambuehl), an exotic dancer turned receptionist. And just to be sure viewers get their fill of gorgeous female flesh, there's a beachwear fashion show with four more models.

The show's stars, however, are the two brothers who own the dating service: Warren and Jack Baldwin. (The Baldwin brothers? Or a Beatty and Nicholson homage?) Jack (Peter Dobson) is supposedly the good-looking, womanizing one. His dating motto is ''in bed by Letterman, out the door by Conan.'' Warren (Mitchell Whitfield) is the serious brother who keeps the business going. He is also such an amazing lover that in the first episode two spectacular women compare him to the Energizer Bunny. Remarkably, Mr. Whitfield makes Warren likable.

The cast is rounded out by Patrick Bristow as Ian, the token celibate. The running gag is that no one knows whether he has given up gay sex or straight sex, and he's not telling. If you worked with these people, you wouldn't either.

There are some funny lines in the show, about dating men in comas and about the appropriate dating-service fee for a woman trapped in a man's body. The level of most of the humor, however, is represented by this exchange: ''I am a good guy.'' ''You're a horny guy.'' ''Well, I'm good and horny. Sounds like a candy bar.''
