Whitman Mayo, Grady of 'Sanford and Son,' dies
May 23, 2001 Posted: 7:35 AM EDT (1135 GMT)
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Actor Whitman Mayo, best known for his role as Grady on the 1970s hit television show "Sanford and Son," died Tuesday in Atlanta of a heart attack. He was 70.
Mayo had been hospitalized for the last two months due to a hernia, a spokeswoman for the family said. He died at 5:15 a.m. as he was being transported from one hospital to another.
Mayo worked in the television and film industry for more than 30 years. He gained fame as the affable character Grady Wilson on "Sanford and Son," known for his trademark expression: "Good goobily goop!"
Most recently, Whitman hosted Turner South's original weekly series "Liars & Legends" and was an adjunct professor at Clark Atlanta University instructing a film/theater class.
"Turner South is deeply saddened by the death of Whitman Mayo," said David Rudolph, vice president and general manager of Turner South, a division of AOL Time Warner, which also owns CNN.
Among Whitman's TV credits are "Diff'rent Strokes," "In the Heat of the Night," "Trapper John, M.D." and "The Cape." Whitman's film credits include John Singleton's "Boyz in the Hood," "The Main Event" with Barbra Streisand and the 1999 "Waterproof" with Burt Reynolds.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Gail Reid Mayo, and three grown children.

Natalie Cole's sister Cookie dies
Published: May 22, 2009 at 10:53 AM
NEW YORK, May 22 (UPI) -- Natalie Cole's older sister Carol "Cookie" Cole died while the U.S. singer was undergoing kidney transplant surgery this week, another sibling said.
Natalie Cole, who suffers from hepatitis C and had been undergoing kidney dialysis three times a week, was with her dying sister when she received a call from doctors saying a kidney was available from a donor and she should head to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles immediately for transplant surgery, the New York Post reported. Cookie died while Natalie was having her operation.
"This is all so surreal, and it is devastating," Natalie's younger sister, Timolin, told the newspaper.
"Our sister Cookie hadn't been to a doctor in 30 years, and last week she went in and they found a cancerous spot on her lung. They had wanted to start chemo right away, but Cookie said no," Timolin said. "Natalie was there with her at her bedside at 4 in the morning on Monday, and she got a phone call from her doctors that a kidney was ready for her. She said: 'What do you mean? I can't deal with that right now! I'm here with my dying sister!' And they said to her: 'No, ma'am. We've got to do it now. You've got to be at Cedars-Sinai in two hours.'"
Timolin Cole said she told Natalie the donated kidney was "God's gift" and insisted she go to the hospital immediately.
"Cookie would want this for you," Timolin Cole recalled telling Natalie before the recording artist went to the hospital and underwent surgery, which doctors have called a success.
