The Governor and J.J. aired from September 1969 until December 1970 on CBS.

This CBS comedy was called The Governor and JJ despite the fact that Julie Sommars who played daughter Jennifer Jo "JJ" Drinkwater was cast first (and was a key factor in choosing co-star Dan Dailey as her dad, Governor William Drinkwater). One of the needs of any man in high political office is someone to organize social functions and serve as first lady. For Governor William Drinkwater ( Dan Dailey) the chief executive of a small Midwestern state, and a widower, that someone was his attractive 23-year-old daughter Jennifer Jo ( Julie Sommars). Despite the problems caused by their generation gap, J.J. served her father as a charming and effecient first lady. Bright and opinionated, she was always willing to debate issues, and possessed the uncanny knack for getting her father into and out of political hot water. She also had a regular job as an assistant currator at a zoo, which presented a nice counterpoint to politics. It may also explain her foundness for a stray basset hound that she brought into the family in January 1970 and named him appropriately Guv. Around the executive mansion she sought and received assistance from the governor's secretary Maggie( Neva Patterson), his press secretary,George ( James Callahan), and the housekeeper Sara( Nora Marlowe). Much of the humour in the show revolved around the governor's bumbling. At the time of the series debut, an American TV Guide reviewer said "if you believe the characters here, The Governor and JJ is on after your bedtime and you should not be watching it." The series was one of the few sixties sitcoms filmed before a live audience.
