Poster: Stuck In The '70's  (see this users gallery)

Fired up ran from April 1997 until February 1998 on NBC.

Gwen ( Sharon Lawrence), was an imperious high-powered public relations executive and Terry( Leah Remini), her long-suffering assistant. They were fired on the same day from a large Manhattan firm in this unusual " change of career" sitcom. Rather than go their separate ways, they decided to combine their talents-Gwen's contacts and Terry's smarts-and start their own small promotions firm, living in and operating out of Terry's SoHo loft. Boss and Bossee were now partners, leading to many adjustments, especially for selfish Gwen. Danny ( Mark Feuerstein), was Terry's smart-mouth brother, a struggling writer who lived with them and worked at Guy's ( Jonathan Bank's), bar downstairs. Ashley ( Mark Davis), was Guy's son, a female impersonator, and Mrs. Francis (Francesca P. Roberts), an unemployment office worker.

A Review From The New York Times

Lighter Side of Downsizing

The new series ''Fired Up'' comes with a topical premise and an edgy lead character, just what most sitcoms lack. Sharon Lawrence (far from her role as the smart but dowdy Sylvia Costas on ''N.Y.P.D. Blue'') plays Gwen, a chic, aloof public relations executive downsized out of a large company. When she is finally forced to apply for unemployment, the woman who takes her application asks, ''What brings you here, Duchess?''

But this promising concept soon turns into another silly sitcom device. Gwen's put-upon assistant, Terry, was also let go. In the first show, the destitute Gwen moves into Terry's large Manhattan loft, which they share with Terry's brother, Danny. The women start a public relations company as equal partners. Before long, ''Fired Up'' becomes a matter of the actors trying to rise above the contrived material.

They do that surprisingly well. Ms. Lawrence has sharp comic timing (though she doesn't really need to drop her voice to Tallulah Bankhead depths to make her point). As the middle-class Terry, Leah Remini is down to earth without being condescending. But only Mark Feuerstein, as Danny, seems completely comfortable. That may be because Danny, an aspiring writer who works in the bar beneath their apartment, is a slightly more believable character from the start.

Tonight's mildly amusing show cranks up the show's premise. But future episodes, though not terrible, never offer the sharp writing this series needs. When Gwen decides to sell her share of a racehorse, the ending is sentimental. The series is scheduled to run in the cushy Thursday night slot after ''Seinfeld'' through May 15. Long before then the abrasive Gwen shows signs of softening and becoming one more mushy sitcom character.
