Free Country aired from June until July 1978 on ABC.
Rob Reiner assumed the dual role of a young Lithuanian immigrant, and the same man at age 89 in this comedy-drama. Reiner opened each episode as the elderly Joseph Bresner, reminiscing about the days when he was a young man newly arrived in the USA. The scene then shifted to New York City's Lower East Side in the early 1900's, where Joseph and his bride Anna ( Judy Kahan), struggled to understand the customs of their adopted homeland. Ida and Sidney Gewertzman ( Renee Lippin, Fred McCarren), were their neighbors, Louis ( Joe Pantoliano), was a friend, and Leo Gold ( Larry Gelman), a border. Rob Reiner was co-writer, and co-producer of this series as well as it's star.
