Poster: Stuck In The '70's  (see this users gallery)

First Time Out aired from September until December 1995 on The Wb.

Jackie ( Jackie Guerra), was the receptionist at the trendy Tudor Hair Salon in L.A. and shared an apartment with her 2 friends, Dominique and Susan ( Leah Remini, Mia Cottet), in this single-girl comedy. Recently graduated from Yale, she was going to law school at night and longed for the day when she could make a difference in the world-and find a man. Cynical Dominique was a production assistant at Ventura Records; and neurotic, analytical Susan was about to get her license as a psychotherapist. Working with Jackie at the salon were her good friend Rosa (Tracy Vilar), and Freddy ( Harry Van Gorkum), an obnoxious, womanizing English hairstylist. Madeline ( Roxanne Beckford), was the yuppie executive who lived across the hall, and Nathan ( Craig Anton), was Jackie's klutzy, sex-obssesed childhood friend who worked at the L.A. Review. He had a million ideas but was incapable of staying focused long enough to finish anything.

Comedienne Jackie Guerra, who according to The WB Network was " the first Latina to star in her own television series," was quoted in the press complaining about the stereotypical nature of her character, but since First Time Out only lasted for 13 episodes, she had little time to do much about it.

A Review from Variety

First Time Out
((Sun. (10), 9-9:30 p.m., WB Network))
By CAROLE HORST

Jackie is a Yale grad with a degree in philosophy and theusual sitcom complement of friends: Susan (Mia Cottet), the ditsy blonde, a therapist in training; Dominique (Leah Remini), the tough chick, who works for a record company; and Nathan (Craig Anton), the girl-crazy platonic friend (read Ayre Gross on "Ellen").

Produced by Columbia Pictures Television. Exec producer, Marc Sotkin; producers Gail Parent, Jon Spector; co-creators, Diane Wilk, Shawn Schepps; director, Shelley Jensen; writers,Schepps, Wilk; camera, Mikal Neiers; editor, Larry Harris; production designer, Larry Wiemer; sound, Christopher Banninger; theme, Jellybean Benitez, Ed Terry; music, Matt Ender. TX:Cast: Jackie Guerra, Mia Cottet, Leah Remini, Craig Anton, Tracy Vilar, Roxanne Beckford. The first Latina to topline a sitcom , Jackie Guerra brings fine comic timing to "First Time Out," a promising offering on the Warner Bros. Network that's a cross between "Ellen" and "Living Single." In its Sunday night timeslot, it should draw female viewers from the dug-in deep "Married ... With Children" on Fox. For all her education, Jackie works as a receptionist in a trendy hair salon.
Jackie is also very heavy, but Guerra plays it with high self-esteem -- a kind of post-feminism chubby lib -- and the fat jokes are actually funny.

Jackie's Hispanic heritage is subtly played; her ethnicity is assimilated into her character -- a refreshing difference in the age of over-the-top characterizations found on such series as "Martin."

First installment mines the well-worn territory of the single woman searching for a man, but handles the battle-scarred plot with good humor and above-average writing.

Those elements should bring back viewers for a second time; there's potential here for more, as the cast's chemistry is first rate.

Guerra should be able to -- and allowed to -- carve a strong voice for herself on the series.

'FIRST TIME' FOR LATINAS ON TV JACKIE GUERRA A PIONEER IN SITCOM LAND WITH NEW WB SHOW
BY ROBERT DOMINGUEZ

Friday, September 15th 1995, 1:12AM

TODAY MARKS THE BEGINNING OF Hispanic Heritage Month, honoring the vast contributions the culture has made on practically every aspect of American society. But you'd never know it by turning on the television set.

This week also kicks off the new season, and it shouldn't surprise anyone to find there's still a dearth of Latino characters up and down the new fall lineups.

There has been a slight improvement over past years a new WB network sitcom, "First Time Out," actually centers around a Latina character, a Mexican-American career girl played by comic Jackie Guerra.

But overall, the networks have yet to realize an enormous market is out there clamoring to be represented on mainstream TV and not as domestics, criminals or other stereotypical characters.

Guerra, whose "First Time Out" debuted Sunday (Ch. 11 at 9:30 p.m.), says she welcomes the responsibility of being the first Latina to carry a show. But she adds it's also "pathetic and depressing" that such a big deal has to be made of the fact.

The sentiment is echoed by Lauren Velez, who's been added to the cast of "New York Undercover" on Fox. "The worst is when it hits you all of a sudden: 'Wow! I'm one of the very few Latinas on TV!' " says Velez, who plays cop Nina Moreno.

The battle intensified early this year, when the National Hispanic Media Coalition called for a boycott of ABC after the network allegedly reneged on a commitment to include more Latinos in its programing. In response, ABC reportedly initiated a program to nurture Latino writers.

It's a positive step, but there's still a long way to go before characters are portrayed in a "sensitive and positive way to appeal to Latino audiences," notes Gabriel Reyes of Galan Entertainment, a production company financed by Fox. "There are few Latino producers, directors and writers working in the mainstream. The challenge is to groom and mentor them to take positions of power."

Of course, that will only happen when a Latino-oriented show becomes a hit. Guerra, for reasons other than the obvious, is hoping her show will break through. "The bottom line is dollars, and as soon as we make money for someone, everyone else will be doing copycat shows," she says.

Until then, it doesn't look like change is gonna come.
