This animated sitcom was a spin-off from Beavis and Butt-head in which the boy's sardonic friend Daria (voiced by Tracy Grandstaff), -the brainy girl with the big glasses and the permanent smirk- got a life of her own at Lawdale High School But what a life. Her successful parents, Jake and Helen( Julian Robolledo, Wendy Hoopes), couldn't figure her out. Her self esteem teacher couldn't remember her name. And her fellow students, well, they were dummies anyway. What made it all bearable was that Daria viewed such nonsense with wry bemusement. When her parents worried that she had low self esteem, she merely replied, " I have low self esteem for everyone else." Quinn ( also Wendy Hoopes), was her dumb sexy sister, and Jayne Layne ( Wendy Hoopes again), her sarcastic friend.
In the series finale ( A tv movie called Is It College Yet?), Daria failed to get into fancy Ivy League College Bromwell, but was accepted at Raft College; Jayne, after some agonizing went to Boston Fine Arts College; and Brittany( Janie Mertz), and the other cheerleaders wound up at Great Prairie State University.

Mtv's Animated Daria A Dour Delight

DARIA. Tonight, 10:30, MTV. 3 STARS
DON'T THINK of MTV's newest animated series, "Daria," as a spinoff of "Beavis and Butt-head" even though the female character once shared the company and endured the ridicule of that famously juvenile TV duo.
Think of it, instead, as an animated version of "My So-Called Life."
That's because Daria, like Claire Danes' character in that charmingly insightful ABC drama, is a young woman who sees almost everyone around her parents, siblings, teachers and certainly her high-school classmates as antagonists sent to annoy, torture or misunderstand her.
And at this point in her life, she's not far off.
Daria, though, is no victim. She's more like Eeyore, the depressed donkey in the "Winnie the Pooh" stories: walking through the same territory as all the other characters, but adopting a decidedly different viewpoint and tone.
Having moved with her family to a new town, even the pessimistic Daria doesn't expect to find more peers like Beavis and Butt-head ("Not unless there's uranium in the drinking water here, too"). But though her ditsy sister Marcia Brady to her Jan has no problem being accepted, Daria does.
"My history teacher hates me because I know all the answers," she reports at dinner but it's merely an observation, not a complaint.
"I don't have low self-esteem," Daria explains. "I have low esteem for everyone else."
Daria has problems with popularity, but "Daria" should be a big MTV hit. By the way: great theme song by Splendora, too.
