Detective School aired from July until November 1979 on ABC.
James Gregory ( Inspector Luger on Barney Miller), headed the cast in this short-lived comedy. Nick Hannigan's ( Gregory's),flea-bitten detective school and agency was supposed to be a night school for sleuths, nothing more.Unfortunately his motley collection of students was constantly getting involved in real cases, to comic effect and Nick more than once had to bail them out. Sometimes they had to bail him out. Dawkins ( Randolph Mantooth), was an enthusiastic young man who worked in a shoe store; Jenkins ( LaWanda Page), a black housewife with a smart mouth, often aimed at aging fellow student Robert Redford (Douglas V. Fowley, who was obviously no kin to the movie star). Frick(Pat Proft), sold vacuum cleaners door-to-door; Galindez (Taylor Negron), was an oily, Argentinian hooked on the disco scene. Petite Teresa Cleary ( Jo Ann Harris), the sixth student, was replaced by gorgeous Maggie Ferguson (Melinda Naud), in September.
Introduced for a 4 week trial run in the summer of 1979, Detective School ( then titled Detective School-One Flight Up), proved popular enough to warrent a spot on ABC's fall schedule, but it quickly died when faced with tougher competion.
