Broadside ran from September 1964 until September 1965 on ABC.
This military comedy featured a group of U.S. Navy WAVES who were assigned to a South Pacific Island during WW 2, and found themselves surrounded by thousands of sailors and an unappreciative CO. As an experiment Lt. Amy Morgan ( Kathy Nolan formerly of The Real McCoys), and her girls had been sent to Ranakai Island as replacements for male motor pool personnel, but Cdr. Adrien ( Edward Andrews), the base CO, did not appreciate the resulting disruption. Ranakai was one of the quietest posts in the Pacific, and until they arrived, Adrien had had a soft tour, complete with a Persion rug in his office, Rolls-Royce staff car, and gourmet meals ( prepared by his eccentric, but world-famous chef, Stanley Stubbs ( Arnold Stang)).
Others in the cast included, Joan Staley as Pvt. Roberta Love; Lois Roberts as Pvt. Molly McGuire; Sheila James ( of Dobie Gillis fame), as Pvt. Selma Kowalski; Dick Sergeant as Lt. Maxwell Trotter, Anne Morgan's boyfriend; George Furth as Lt. Beasley,Adrien's assistant; and Jimmy Boyd as Pvt. Marion Botnik.
Most episodes consisted of Adrien's attempts to get the WAVES to transfer stateside by such clever ploys as cutting off their lipstick supply. Some concerned the " plight" of Pvt. Marion Botnik, who had been assigned to the WAVES by mistake when a personnel clerk mistook his name for that of a female.
Broadside was produced by the creator of McHale's Navy, Edward J. Montagne.
