Breaking Away ran from November 1980 until July 1981 on ABC.
Breaking Away was another example of the fact that hit movies do not necessarily make hit tv series. In this case it was to bad. This refreshing series was set in the college town of Bloomington, Indiana, where 4 high school buddies spent their time playing pranks on the lordly, University Of Indiana fraternity men ( who disdainly called them " cutters," after the town's blue-collar stone cutters), dealing with their parents and just growing up. Dave ( Shaun Cassidy), was the central character, an intelligent dreamy boy whose great pashion was bicycle racing, and whose prized possesion was a $1,200 La Strada bike he'd won. His buddies were easy-going Moocher (( Jackie Earle Haley), sardonic Cyril (Thom Bray), and aggressive football star Mike ( Tom Wiggin). Dave's father was Ray ( Vincent Gardenia), a stone-cutter turned used-car-salesman who wished Dave would settle down to a meat-and-potatos existance like his own. Evelyn ( Barbara Barrie), was the mediating mother, and Roy ( John Ashton), was buddy Mike's brother, a campus cop.
Though the show was canceled in January 1981, a few episodes were later televised on Mondays to fill the gap in programming caused by the baseball players strike.
Re-creating their rolls from the 1979 film Breaking Away were Barbara Barrie( who had been nominated for an academy award), Jackie Earle Haley and John Ashton.
