The Alan Young Show was a half hour comedy-variety show later a half-hour sitcom that ran from April 1950 until June 1953 on CBS.
Young Canadian comedian Alan Young seemed to have a very bright future when he first moved to the new medium of television in 1950( he had previously been on radio for a number of years). Critics applauded his gentile intelligent humor, his versatality, and the excellent writing for his shows. " The Charlie Chaplin of television" TV Guide called him. " Without benifit of purloined gags, squirting seltzer; bad grammar, insults, references to his family, wornout guest stars, or womens hats he has quietly become the rave of a growing legion of loving fans."
Young first appeared in a variety show which ran from April 1950 until March 1952 and it was a moderate hit. Young generally played a well-meaning young man who constantly wound up in a predictament . His half-hour shows consisted of a brief monologue, a song or two by a vocalist , and 2 complete skits-ranging from the first-time airline passenger who turns a peaceful flight into chaos, to a small boy in a world of very large furniture.
Despite his talents, Young's shows never really caught on. After two and a half seasons of the skit format , he returned in the spring of 1953 in a situation comedy which cast him as a bank teller, with a girlfriend Kay Prindall played by Dawn Addams. The sitcom aired on alternate weeks with The Ken Murray Show under the umbrella title Time To Smile. After 2 unsuccessful months, Young returned to his familiar two skit variety format but this failed to save the series from final cancellation in June 1953.
After doing a British variety series in 1958, Young resurfaced in 1961 with Mr. Ed. When Mr. Ed folded in 1966, Young left show buesness to become active in the Christian Science Church. He returned to television briefly in the late 1980's with the short lived sitcom, Coming Of Age.
