Operation Petticoat aired from September 1977 until August 1979 on ABC.
This was a World War 11 comedy set in the Pacific. Lt. Cdr. Matthew Sherman ( John Astin) was a navy career officer anxious to see action before the war was over. When he finally was assigned to command the submarine Sea Tiger, however, he arrived to find the craft sunk at dockside. No sooner did he get it patched up and half painted , with pink undercoating , than he had to put to sea quickly to avoid another air raid-hence the navy's first pink submarine. Compounding his problems on board were five army nurses, whom he had rescued , and a wheeler-dealer supply officer, Lt. Holden ( Richard Gilliland), who wanted to avoid combat as much as Sherman wanted to find it.
Operation Petticoat was as leaky in the ratings as it was at sea, and when it returned for a second season virtually the entire cast had been changed. Lt. Cdr. Haller ( Robert Hogan) was the new skipper, and Lt. Bender ( Randolph Mantooth) his wheeler-dealer executive officer. There were new nurses led by Lt. O'Hara ( Jo Ann Pflug), new crew members , and also a new mission. The Sea Tiger was now assigned to patrol the Pacific for downed airmen and sailors. It didn't help. The series was canceled after only four episodes with the new crew. Repeats aired during the summer of 1979, along with the one new episode.
Based on the 1959 movie starring Cary Grant and Tony Curtis, whose daughter, Jamie Lee Curtis , played one of the nurses in this series during the 1977-1978 season.
