Info:
Premiere Date: Monday, January 9, 2006 (Sony Pictures Television)
Network: ABC
Time: Mondays at 9:00 p.m.
Cast: Starring Heather Graham, Nadia Dajani, Khary Payton, and Smith Cho.
Introduction:
Based on the bestselling novel of the same title,
Heather Graham stars in this comedy about one
independent woman’s adventures in life, friendship,
love and their infinite possibilities…
Coming this mid-season to ABC is a sitcom will bring
both women and men together in a divine way. Emily's
Reasons Why Not is a fast-paced sitcom, a la Jake in
Progress (which follows Emily at 9:30), that will lure
both women and men together. Women because they will
want to know the reasons why not about dating and men
because, well, Heather Graham is in it.
Cast Details:
"Emily's Reasons Why Not" stars Heather Graham as
Emily, Nadia Dajani as Reilly, Khary Payton as Josh,
and Smith Cho as Glitter.
Emily Sanders is a successful young woman with
terrific taste, great friends and a fabulous job in
publishing. She didn’t get to this place in life by
accident. She worked hard and always followed a set of
self-imposed guidelines referred to as the “Reasons.”
Reasons why not to take that new job offer, reasons
why not to tell a vacation fling to look you up if
he’s ever in Los Angeles, reasons why not to trust
your crafty, back-stabbing former assistant, Glitter
Cho. However, when Emily crosses professional lines
and gets involved with the roguishly handsome,
two-timing author of their new best seller, there’s no
denying somewhere along the way her internal GPS
system has crashed. She’s got to get back on track,
and once again be heedful of the trustworthy reasons
that help her navigate her way through life.
Pilot Plot:
The pilot is basically introduces us to the reasons
why not concept. The sitcom is a one camera sitcom
that is fast paced and takes place primarily at
Emily's job and her evenings. Majority of the pilot is
about Emily's new mysterious date. Is he gay?
Because he doesn't want to kiss or do anything to
Emily. Emily explores the reasons why not and you
don't want to miss the ending if he is gay or not!
Emily and little miss Glitter Cho have a duel which is
fun to watch. They both try to outdue each other.
Analysis:
While I'm not a fan of these type of sitcoms, it is
watchable. If you are not big on Two and a Half Men
on CBS then this is for you. Ladies who watched their
husbands watch Monday Night Football the past three
months will like to tune in and make sure you drag
your husbands, too. I think the show is very similar
to Jake in Progress. The pilot of this show is a bit
better than Jake's pilot last season. I like the
battle between Emily and Glitter. Wow, Sony Pictures
hasn't given us a sitcom in awhile. They were the
leader before, especially in the '70s and '80s. Nice
to see them come back.
Conclusion:
With Valentine's Day approaching this winter, this
sitcom is debuting at the perfect time. The timeslot
is tough as ABC has never found a hit on Monday nights
after Monday Night Football. I think it will at least
last the season and hopefully if ABC does get Arrested
Development, they can turn Monday nights into a one
camera sitcom night next season. It's not laugh out
loud funny, but you will be interested. I just hope
the subsequent episodes will be also. Crumbs is by far
the funnier show. I'd rank Emily's pilot higher than
Freddie (which has gotten better and better as the
season has gone along) and Hot Properties (which is
now canceled). Tune in to sample it on Jan. 9 at 9/8
central.
Final Numbers (out of 5 stars):
Watchability: 4.5/5
Funniness: 4/5
Overall: 4/5
