tired of BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE?!! I swear it has severely gone down the tubes the past few years. What's going on? I'm not ragging on anybody who works retail because believe me, I worked retail for alot of years, and I know what it's like. It's not easy, it's not the best paying job, but I never acted the way towards customers that I'm talked to. I'm as nice as I can be because I know what it's like to be on the other side of the counter.
I went to the local grocery store today, a store that I usually have no problem with whenever I go there, that's why I like going there. The cashier was an older woman, and not only was she rude to the elderly lady ahead of me who really didn't know how to use the credit card machine(I ended up helping her), but when she got to me, I wrote a check and gave her my I.D.. She kept my I.D. for a couple minutes, then while she was giving it back to me, snapped at me by saying "You didn't need to give me this because you're already in the system". I didn't appreciate her tone, so I said back to her "Well, I give it anyway whenever I write a check". By then, my stuff was already bagged up(I only had 3 bags), and picked up my bags and said to her "I never had a problem whenever I come here until now, and I don't appreciate you talking to me so rudely", then I walked out. Yes, I could've gone to the manager but I was so pissed, I'm afraid I would've just taken it out on him. Maybe she was in a bad mood, that's possible, but then she shouldn't be working with customers. I went to Wal-mart before that and wrote a check there, too, and gave her my I.D. Now, I know I'm in their system, too but did the lady say anything to me about that? No.
Then, a few weeks ago, I went to Lowe's, and while I was at the check-out, the girl ringing me up was yakking to another employee standing nearby who was doing nothing. She was so busy talking to her, she hardly said 2 words to me. I thinking "Hello, it's me, the customer, one of the main reasons the store stays open, can you not focus on me for 2 minutes?" It's like she couldn't wait the short couple minutes to ring me up and wait until after I left to tell her 'fascinating story'. Lowe's is not the only store this has happened in, either.
Am I'm looking too much into all this, am I'm just letting it get to me, or does anybody else feel the same way? It's to the point where I really don't like shopping anymore because you never know what kind of person is going to be ringing you up.
There's a store up north in the Mich./Ohio/Ind. area called Meijer's and when I'm in that area for my job, I always make it a point to stop at Meijer's and shop. I just love that store. It's just like a Wal-mart Supercenter but I think it's better. They have a few check-out aisles which are self serve and I'd be happy just doing that. I'm not saying that I think all stores should be self serve because that would put alot of people out of work, but sometimes it's nice not to have to face a human and deal with the attitude & unpleasantness. I keep e-mailing them to get them
to build a few stores here in Fla. If they built one in Orlando, I would drive the extra 45 min. to shop there.
I don't think I ask for much, just a smile and an acknowledgement, and maybe even a thank you or have a nice day. Am I asking too much?

But if you are on the other side of the service like I have been since working as a cook, cashier, clerk for the public, you would know how to treat people the way you like them too and be considerate when YOU are the customer!! People who have bad attitudes don't know what it is like to work with the public because they feel they don't need to know or have jobs not dealing with the public!!

So, what you're saying is I have the bad attitude? Hey, I was in a good mood going into her line, then I saw the way she was towards the elderly lady, and I was STILL nice to her until she snapped at me. I'm supposed to put up with that?!! The last time I checked customers were the reason all the stores in this country are able to stay open!

I work @ a grocery store and always use the best of my manners. Im polite and courteous. Sometimes though Ill see how other cashiers are and how rude they act and it just boggles my mind. Given, not every customer is a gem, but I can honestly say in the 2.5 years Ive been working there, Ive had about 15 or so 'bad customers' and only about 3 or 4 that take it out on me. I always get the good customers, and I think partly is because Im nice to them. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Since I work with the public, I notice more now how other cashiers act when I go shopping @ Wal-Mart or whatever. A lot of them are nice yes, but I get so many that dont even ask how I am. I dont really care, but theyre supposed to ask anyways.

I work at a grocery store part time right now to make money for my college education. Overall, Iam pretty nice to the customers, but I have had my moments where I have been rude back to the customer. It depends on how rude they are to me.

i work in public, i hate it. first of all i work at fye at a mall....about 65% of the people who come in are crackpots. seriously...they are all antisocial/rude/weirdos...when i first started working there i was really nice and tried to do my best with dealing with people...but it gets to a point where you just have to humor people, its not worth the energy to do anything else. ugh...its pretty sad that i dont care anymore....but i dont get paid enough to be any nicer than i currently am to people

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one that feels that way. I mean sometimes I will go and do a price check, knowing that the customer is wrong, yet I will tell them they are right because I don't want to hear them bitch and moan and yell at me. I gave up on caring about that stuff awhile ago.

I also work at a grocery store in the deli. I don't have to worry about taking money though, but I RARELY hear people say please or thank you when they want food. Even though, there's lots of days where I'm in a bad mood or don't want to be there, I still smile to the customers and act happy. That's the one thing that bothers me with workers is when they actually SHOW that they are in a bad mood.

that was prolly the funniest thing i've heard all day...
ok, so I don't want to sound all "discriminating" but this is what happens in MY mall, it's the case in my mall.
So, all the anti-Hot Topic people are always going on and on about how weird that store is and they're all let's go to Claires! Claire's is the GOOD store. Weird people don't work at Claires. Yea...so ya go into Claires and it's a PIG STY, it's cluttered, there's earrings EVERYWHERE, and then you got the ONE obnoxious person on the phone, this is what the typical conversation is like:
"Hey baby...yea...oh, customer...no, I'm still here *rings up the stuff* yea, that party was great last night! *gives price, annoying laugh* yea, yea, oh hold on, other line...
HEY GIRL! Nah, I'm just on the other line with my boyfriend...*shoves the bag in the person's face*. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah...*a person comes up and asks if they have something* omg, I know, I know, *to the person* what did you ask again? Oh, they're somewhere...maybe in the corner...yea...look there..."
They're OBNOXIOUS, yet you walk into Hot Topic the so-called "weird" store...and people ask if they can help you, they're ALWAYS polite, I have never once had a bad experience in Hot Topic, yet I've had only ONE good experience in Claires...
I don't mean to sound "discriminatory" to anyone who might work at Claire's or something, that's just personal experience...Hot Topic is my favorite store, my MOM even loves the people who works there.
I hate rude clerks, I really do, b/c I'm always friendly and nice...ugh.

I'm a bagger and can honestly say I'm nice to all the customers. However, sometimes a cashier will get rude (although most of them are nice, once in a while they have a bad day) I always try to make up for it by being EXTRA nice before the customer leaves the store. Not because I'm trying to get them to come back, but because I feel sorry for them getting treated the way they did.
As a result of working in a grocery store, I understand what other workers go through at other stores. So I try to be nice to them.
I get some real mean customers sometimes that make me feel bad for days. And yet, I can't find the courage to say anything back to them. I guess it's good since I won't get fired, but sometimes I just want to go off.
As for Phoebe, you're right. That cashier shouldn't have treated you the way she did. And if I was the bagger then, I'd have apologized to you for her.

When I do a price check, the customer never believes me. They always make me feel like I'm stupid. And then when they go back with me and find out they were wrong and I was right, they don't even aplogize.

I worked at Walmart for 8 years. It was HELL. I'll never ever EVER work retail again. Never. Working in the public like that every day, 40 hours a week was insane. People are SO rude. I've just never ever encountered in my life things I did while I was working there.
I feel bad for whomever said they work at FYE. Yikes. That would be worse than Walmart I think becdause it would be so many kids/teenagers and dealing with theft, etc. This is not a knock on teenagers before anyone starts I'm just saying that when I worked at the store I was in we had a lot of problems with groups of kids.
I love what I do now, working with kids. Mostly young, complete opposite of what I dealt with at walmart.

First of all Phoebe I am not saying that you are rude at all!! It is just when I am a customer I know what clerks and cashiers go through and I try to be polite and considerate because they have feelings too and are human. And it isn't just customers at Wal-Mart(aka the Holocost) it is the management. The management at my store terminate and/or the employees walk out because of the drill sargent management. About eight former employees a month.

Not so easy. I've been working in public service for over 3 years now. Most people are nice and cooperative, that is if youplay by their rules, but you do occasionally get the rotten apples. The key to success is learning how to read people. I just simply see someone walk into the lobby of our hotel and I already know what I have to say and do to suit that person's best needs and interests. Also, mowings lawns isn't really an option for a lot of us. For me, I need to make enough money to pay the rent, bills, grocery shopping, etc.

Might as well put on your happy face and just deal with it. Being a sour-puss all the time wont make matters any better. Although, I must say some customers just arent worth the energy, and just need a good attitude.

I really do try my best to be nice to everybody I encounter at stores. Please don't think I'm that way with everybody. In fact, there have been numerous times where I have bitten my tongue and not said anything at all, although I felt that I've could've been treated a bit better.
Oh, but for anybody who I felt could've been better, I've also encountered people who were absolutely wonderful, and I make sure their manager knows about my experience with them, too.

it all depends on what you're lookin for... my favorite little greasy-spoon coffee shop is run by this antagonistic woman who spends most of her time working as a waitress and insulting the customers,
the last time i ordered food, i asked for it with hashbrowns instead of fries, mayonaise instead of ketchup, no onions, extra pickles, and her reply was:
"you will get what i bring you and you will like it"
but i like it even better when i ask her for cream/sugar/ketchup/whatever, and she tells me
"you know where it is - go get it yourself and stop bothering ME"

I work at KMart and I can honestly say that only about 5% of customers suck. I mean, horribly. I'm only rude to 1 of maybe 10 customers, and that's only if they make me wanna hurl. That's why when I go shopping anywhere, I make it a point to say/ask "How ya doing?" "Have a good day/night" "Please" and "Thank you." I know what hell retail... really any customer-related... workers go through.
And I know what it's like to be in a bad mood at work. Sometimes I just wanna slash customers' throats, no matter if they're rude or the sweetest people alive. But I'm ALWAYS nice and polite to everyone, no matter how angry I feel. I snap when I'm angry and the customer's a jerk.
And, y'know... I wish every customer gave me their ID when cashing a check, whether they were in the system or not. It would eliminate the potential pain-in-the-arse of asking for it when you discover they AREN'T in the system.

Ok here's my two cents. I work as a cashier at Walgreens. I have been for a year and a half. Plus two other stores prior to this one. Now, TRUE there are cashier's that are rude to there customers, and TRUE they shouldn't be. BUT there are times when we have a day so full of irrate customers that once a normal one or a civil comes along we are so enraged and we can't take it out on the customers that it might come out in our voice that we are rude or giving you an attitude. When in all actuality, we are just so FED UP, with a customer wanting to know why we have no more Pepsi in stock when the sale just started, and I tell them because it sold out but we will be getting more in tommorow (all cheery like) and she storms off with "oh I'll never come here again!" and you see em the next day, that we don't realize we're beign rude to the next nice customer. THEN there are times when we have a associate that works with us that is having a personal problem or something, that she needs to get off her chest so the cashier listens. Then what happens? The cashier gets a customer so she deals with the customer while listening to the girl she works withs' problems, and all is easy enough, until the customer asks where something is in the store that she was CLEARLY staring at two minutes ago, and so the cashier proceeds to slyly point at the area where the item is that is a foot away from the customer, while STILL listening to her co-workers problems not wanting to cut off her by talking to the customer and seeming rude, then the customer says she can't find it and it's STARING HER IN THE FACE but you don't want to be rude to the customer either. Now you tell me, what would you do in a situation like that? Because let me tell ya, I get really aggrivated when customers don't realize that cashiers have problems in there life that is BIGGER then Walgreens, or Wal-Mart. And we have to be 100% pleasant to custoemrs at all times, even when we're not in a pleasant mood. Or when a cashier gets a phone call that a customer is SO SURE is a personal phone call, which it isn't, and you explain that to them, and they report you for talking on the phone and not paying any attention to them! When in all actuality it was the cashier's OWN manager that called you, andthen the manager in turn yells at YOU for being rude to the customer who just reported you for talking to the manager! LONG STORY SHORT, THE WHOLE RETAIL WORLD STINKS!

THANK YOU! I'm glad someone agrees with me. I'm currently 18, and nobody is going to hire an 18 year old to do a job that doesn't suck. Retail definetly blows. Thank you.

I've worked as a supermarket casher for almost five years now and I've met my share of rude, nasty, unreasonable, demanding, or just plain inconsiderate customers. I've gotten to the point where I just don't give a rat's behind anymore. I try not to stoop to their level, but it's really hard to keep a nice smile when someone is yelling at me and insulting me. I just keep a pleasant face but mentally, I give them the finger and say "Go F yourself!"
Phoebe, I thought the way you handled that cahsier was very mature. I would have said the same thing, or just walked off to another register. I know how it's like to deal with the general public, but there's no need to treat the customer like garbage just for being there in the first place. Respect is a two-way street though. If the customer wants respect, they should show the employee some respect, and vice versa.

I was sick as a dog as I mentioned in an earlier post and was trying to go home but the managers told me they get sick and they grin and bear it!! I was sneezing, coughing, and got complained on by an elderly lady who said that I should be ashamed that I am sick and giving other customers the cold/flu!! I wanted to tell her to drop dead of a heart attack and actually punch out a senior citizen but I would not only be terminated but arrested for assualt!!

hahahaha that is funny, reminds me of when I was sick. This manager whose name I'll leave annonymous (ERICA BARRETT) was my manager one night, and I was really sick. To the point of having to hold my head back so my nose didn't run on the change I was trying to make out of the till. Needless to say it looked very funny, and I felt miserable. So, I paged my manager and told her I think I'd better go home. She got all pissy, and was like why? I said I don't feel good at all. She was like you sound fine. So I got mad and I was like I don't have to sound sick to be sick!!! If she would have gotten off her ass on the phone in the office, and came out to help me ring she would have seen how sick I was!
She was just mad cuz she doesn't like to do any work. I pick up her slack all the time!!! And that night happened to be truck night. That's a night once a week where we get a truck in with anywhere from 1300-1600 boxes that have to be unloaded and put up. Needless to say, it makes for a long night. One you CAN NOT do if you're sick. But I guess she didn't get that.

What a manager. Didn't let you leave when you were sick? What did you have to do, black out on the floor before the manager said, "Okay, go home." ?

There's a problem with managers because they let all the employees do their dirty work and the managers seem to care about money! money! money! and they chow out the employees if they are not working their butts off and even though they work very very hard, nothing is ever pleasing with the management!!

WOW, I didn't know so many people worked in grocery stores! I was a cashier at Foodland for a year, and now I work in the produce department. I really liked it, but I had to quit because the manager cut my hours so severely that I had to go into produce just to get more hours. I was really good at running the register (I thought I would suck) and I found out that I was good with people, but there were still some people that made me cringe when I saw them coming dowm my lane. What got me were all the creepy old guys that flirted with me. Just because I was friendly with them they thought I had the hots for them. I even got stalked (shudders). Another gross old guy liked my friend Lori and I think she told him to leave her alone.
The problem at our store is they don't hire enough people and you hardly ever have any help. I've been there for a year & a half & still just make $5.15 an hour. THEY NEVER GIVE RAISES!!!! I even work in a department now and still haven't gotten a raise. The managers make good money though. There's some people that have worked there for seven years that only make $5.75 per hour. We don't have benefits or anything and it sucks. I agree that workers shouldn't be rude to the customers, I was always taught that there's no excuse for being rude, but people that shop here take advantage. Where I work in produce dept., customers are always coming back and using the phone. Some ask, but most don't. Or They'll come back there and usually scare me to death b/c my back faces the door & I'm usually wrapping stuff and they're like "Do you have any riper bananas?" or "Do you have any boxes, onion sacs, etc?" They even come back there and start going through stuff!
Then over New Years, I was in the cooler bent over in this big, honking box of cabbage & I heard the door open and I just thought it was one of the deli girls, but I looked up (my butt was hanging over the edge of the box & facing the door) and there was a creepy-looking guy standing there looking at me. I screamed & dropped the bag of cabbage I was holding, and he just stood there & asked, "Where's Norma (the manager)?" I just think that customers shouldn't be back where the employees are.
The other day the store manager (Bonnie) quit. She used to work hard, but she just stopped and started talking abut how nobody ever did anything. That's all she ever talked about. I think she went kind of nuts. She wouldn't do anything, but talk to customers about how noone worked, and occassionally she'd hose the sidewalk...So last week the bosses made her trade places with Tony (one of the main people she talked about) she had to check in vendors, unload trucks, stock shelves, and all kinds of other stuff. So she had to do some work, claimed that they were discrimating her, and quit even though she'd worked there off & on for 15 years...Anyway, that's some of the stuff that happens where I work. Even though it's a crazy place to work, I could write a book, we're nice to the customers!
