View Full Version : Michael and Christina are hardly liked in my college!

I had two cassettes of Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a bottle" and Michael Jackson's "Bad". I was selling them because I needed some money. Almost everyone I asked was like "I don't like Christina Aguilera and Michael Jackson. I was getting so frustrated and desperate I was asking men in their 40's and 50's to buy them! I was asking young GUYS to buy Christina! I began asking people twice to buy my cassettes without hardly realizing that I already asked them. Finally, a cafeteria cashier and some construction worker bought them. Hehe! I never knew Christina Aguilera was so unpopular. I knew that Michael was sort of not liked.

well, remember, this is college. People who are 19-20 are "too cool" to like stuff on TRL. They're more into Dave Matthews and stuff that "looks cool". Christina, Britney and Justin do not look cool to people who are trying to impress people with their "I'm so cool" music tastes

he's a sellout too. It really pissed me off when he acted like Layne Staley's death was insignificant... WHEN HE WORKED ROCK RADIO WHEN ALICE IN CHAINS WERE ON TOP!!!!!

Possible reasons:

1. You were selling CASSETTES, no one buys those anymore.
2. The "Genie In a Bottle" cassette you were selling most likely was a bootleg because neither "GIAB" or her debut were released in cassette, only CD.
3. "GIAB" is 5 years old, that song is WAY too old, and it's POP... most college students stay away from pop music as if it was a plague.
4. "Bad" was the beginning of the end for Michael Jackson, if you were selling Thriller or Off The Wall you would of sold them without trouble.
5. People didn't begin to get interested in Christina until Stripped.

Christina isn't unpopular, you were just targeting the wrong crowd. :)

5 years old isn't THAT old for pop music. Look how well Madonna's Immaculate Collection still sells (it scans 4000 a week compared to American Life's 800, and it's been out 14 years), and the most recent track on that album was 1990. Also, old greatest hits albums by the likes of Janet, ABBA and Elton John are perennial sellers. I wouldn't say the fact that it's 5 years old (because 99 doesn't FEEL that long ago) but the fact that the type of pop that song was didn't really age well

Bad wasn't the classic OTW and Thriller were, but it's certainly better than anything that followed. I know quite a few people who consider Dirty Diana their favorite MJ song.

That's teen pop for you, what's fresh five years ago is stale today. Meanwhile, straight rock from the likes of the Stones, Floyd, Zep and others is timeless. So is mature singer-songwriter pop like Jim Croce. There'll come a time when Christina herself will be stale and forgotten. Just like David Cassidy. :D

well, I think Christina's album is already dated cheese. but if Stripped is any indication of what's to come, I think Christina could dodge the "teen pop" stigma and grow as an adult artist. Could be similar to how George Michael's music with Wham was so sugary it's bad for your teeth (tho I confess, Make It Big is a fun album), but his solo albums in the 1990's like Older and Listen Without Prejudice completely made you forget all about I Want Your Sex and Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.

That CD is a classic tho, it has classic songs on it. Christina Aguilera? Sure, I like her and she has a good voice, but does she have what it takes to become a "classic"? Who knows...

And so what? People have different tastes? I don't see what the big deal is.

LOL... you can't compare Christina's debut to Madonna's Immaculate Collection... because it's an album full of ageless classics (her greatest hits,) Christina Aguilera (the album) only has about 6 rememberable songs. And you can't compare to her at all to Pink Floyd, Led, and the Stones... not just yet. Give her time.

Exactly. But Christina does have what it takes to make her a classic, she just hasn't proven herself yet... the respect and quality of Stripped is just an indication of whats to come.

Ok, I can see where you're coming from, however Genie in A Bottle hardly can be considered a classic compared to Madonna's stuff. But I can agree that if her stuff is of the same or higher quality as Stripped then she might have the potential. The songs on GIAB compared to a whole grouping of favorite "classic" songs can't even begin to be compared.

people who have old cars that don't have a cd player in them?

It's kinda funny to see people bashing cassettes, in the 80's and early 90's, they were all the rage

what is so wrong with cassettes? I stopped buying them around 1993 (the early part of the year, because by mid-late 93, I was buying cd's only), but I am not going to deny that they were a big part of my childhood. Just like Janice, I owned a "Bad" cassette as a kid, as did I also have Thriller and Dangerous on tape.

They are pretty useless by todays standards (they don't last long, try putting in a 20 year old cassette and see if it even still plays, and if it does, it doesn't sound great) but they did serve their purpose and todays kids who grew up with cd being the norm obviously don't remember a time when the only people buying cd's were yuppies and most "normal" people were into tapes and vinyl.

The wear factor and the fact that they don't sound nearly as good as records or CDs.

Probaly the chil allegations (Jock Anthem-ite Gary ROCK AND ROLL PT 2 Glittert had similiar allegations but not as strongly convinving to me as with Michael and NOT because Gary is English and white..)

I'm college-aged and starting my third year of college... Not ashamed to say I love Britney, Christina, BSB, *NSYNC, Clay, Kelly... I just love pop music in general. What's cool anyway? Following what other people like? Not me... I only will like what I wanna like.

I would have bought your Christina tape. I need to get a CD adapter for my car, so I can only play tapes right now... and I'm not liking radio these days. Getting tired of the same old rap they're playing.
