I gotta say is that why do you people love the popular & yet overrated sitcoms on the U.S. Cable & Network T.V. from September 21, 2003-present? Let me tell you something. I DON'T!!! All you people wanna see is Friends, The Cosby Show, Cheers, Fraiser, Full House, Roseanne, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Growing Pains, Who's The Boss?, Seinfeld, The Drew Carey Show, Home Improvement, Will & Grace, That 70s Show, The King & Queens, Becker, Cybill, Married With Children, A Different World, Lizzie McGuire, Saved By The Bell, Mama's Family, & all the 50s, 60s, 70s & other shows that are still airing over & over again. Voyagers! was one of my favorites.. sure don't hear anyone talking about it much, if ever. Then again, it didn't last very long anyway.

I could give a crap if it's overrated or underrated. If it's funny, I'll watch it.

Nicely said. BD. I like underrated shows as well, but they're underrated, which means that people don't talk about them much, which is why they're not discussed.

I love Less Than Perfect and George Lopez, two ofthe most underrated shows on tv today, IMHO.

completely agreed.

And have the shows you listed as "underrated" and "shortlived" arent shortlived or underrated.
Its just that networks decide not to show them.
Its not our fault.

Ok, I guess I have to agree with you . Too many sitcoms are overplayed. I would love to see more "Coach", "The Hogan Family","Silver Spoons" , "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir", "Murphy Brown", Newhart" and several others that have gone by the wayside.Enough Cosby already!:bash:

greenlaser5555 has a very valid point. I agree with him (or her). They should play more of those sitcoms especially The Hogan Family and Mr. Belvedere. I would have to say that Who's the Boss? and Growing Pains are not overplayed, but soon Who's the Boss? will be, thanks to everyone's favorite network, Nick at Nite.

Let's see if we can turn this into a good thread and make our own list of sitcoms we believe are over rated. For example, my list:

- Sienfield
- The Cosby Show
- M*A*S*H
- Rosanne

Personally I think the above shows are more over rated than they should be. I'm not saying they are bad shows but I do think they aren't as great as the hype surrounding them makes out.

All opions are welcome on this board, so don't beat a guy/gal up for his/her preferences. More variety and options on the cable channels would be nice, so we don't always get the same ones over and over.

I like some on each of the lists, but I don't watch many shows on cable until summer when reruns dominate the big three or four networks. It depends on when you grew up, as to which decade of shows you like best. I love anything 1950s or early 1960s, but I've enjoyed some 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s sitcoms too.

Next season, "Friends" and "Frasier" will be in reruns ALL the time too.

GREENLASER is the one who needs to respect opinions.

who knew the time would come when people would be "punk" about tv shows like music.

I like shows that might be viewed as overrated (Roseanne, Seinfeld, Cosby, Sex And The City, Golden Girls), shows that are underrated (Roswell, Popular, Gimme A Break, 227) and even a number of shows that aren't well known enough about to be rated either way (VR.5, Life With Roger, Double Trouble, Haunted). Taste, be it movies, music, television, literature, whatever, should be what personally appeals to you, not "this is popular, so I have to hate it to look cool"

Voyagers! was one of my favorites.. sure don't hear anyone talking about it much, if ever. Then again, it didn't last very long anyway.

I loved Voyagers, most people don't even know about that show. It was very entertaining and fun. It probably would have had a long run, if the lead actor did not die with the freak gun accident on the set. For those who don't know the story, they had a prop gun that shot blanks. The lead actor took the prop gun, put it to his temple, and pulled the trigger. The force of the blank killed him. What a shame, he was young.

I agree with some of the sentiment of the original poster. There are some shows that get replayed to death, and other older shows that never see the day of light. But it all comes down to money. How much money can a station make playing Friends, how much will the advertising people pay, compared to Mr Belvidere? I like what TVland has done, bringing back retro commercials, they have a good plan to lure advertising money to older shows. Lets all just hope enough people watch, so we can get the shows we want on tv.

I do like allot on that list, and not all are overated.

I think you make some interesting points here. I am sick of hearing about how great shows like The Cosby Show, Roseanne, Frasier and Friends are when I could care less about these shows.

However, I think that you'll find people with a wide range of taste around here. There are plenty of people around here who are into the same shows that you are. :)

Coach is still on TV - USA shows it
As for Perfect Strangers, Head of the Class, Charles in Charge and Silver Spoons they did air on N@N at one time. Though I agree they were not treated well and not given a lot of air time like TCS and others but if you read this board enough you will notice that a lot of people are sick of and complain about shows that they would like to see and dont get the chance to cause of the overplaying of the same shows on almost any given channel locals included.

A lot of threads have a wishlist for tv line up and some of those lists include some of the shows that you named here. I would love to see Mr. Belvedere again, but at the same time a lot of the shows you named for the respect of those channels that have aired them no matter of the treatment they were given did at least air those shows.

Major Dad was on USA for quite a while a few years back. Personally I did not like this show but I do remember it being on.

I would also like to see...
My Sister Sam
Sister Kate
The New Leave It To Beaver
Alice
One Day At a Time
Too Close For Comfort
Day By Day
etc...
but since I dont have the opportunity, when or if they ever do show these shows I know they will not get good treatment since I am in the minority of people who want to see these shows I will tape them so I do have the opportunity to watch them

Many people stop complaining after so long and just adjust to seeing the same old shows over and over and have their wish list and move on knowing that it is just a wish to see the show again but chances are slim.

Coach - USA early morning hours on weekends maybe weekdays also havent checked.
So Little Time - dont remember the show but check for it on DVD or if it will be released on any DVD as a bonus
Major Dad - Had a run on USA for a few years
Perfect Strangers/Head of The Class/Charles In Charge/Silver Spoons - Had a run on N@N look for it in the future maybe as a special marathon or something on TV Land they may still have the rights
Just The Ten of Us - A spin from Growing Pains so maybe ABC Family will pick it one day they did have Growing Pains
Mr. Belvedere - Best to check on the DVD to see if it is coming out ever - a lot of people on here have listed this as a show they want to see but it seems like we wont get that wish
Kate & Allie - Maybe N@N or TVLand will eventually get it or play it since it was on thier 20 year marathon
Amen - played on a local here for years so maybe it will get picked up again by locals or check for the DVD
Gimme A Break, Webster - What Can I Say! Wait for the DVD
ALF- Played in the afternoons on local and on I believe PAX or some other channel like that about a year ago
It's Your Move - Had a run on TV Land (maybe just a weekend thing but I remember it being on a few years ago
Small Wonder, The New Gidget - I have seen Gidget in syndication though it has been a few years but Small Wonder only heard the name, check to see that it has enough shows for syndication (100 I believe)

Of all these shows they have either played at one time or they have been requested many times so you are not alone and many people have complained their share of complaints about the over playing of shows.
The shows that are overrated keep getting ratings in syndication, and the other got bad treatment and/or lower ratings and were not shown in place of the high rating shows for that reason.

Not everyone likes "overrated" sitcoms, but you seem like you really despise people who do.

Heather987
07-13-2005, 11:36 AM
I do agree with Greenlaser but my point was that most of the shows have been run in syndication at some point and have faired poorly so most companies do not want to pay the big bucks to make their viewers happy but rather there bank accounts larger.
I dont think it is so much that those shows are not missed but rather most people who remember shows from the middle to late 80's era are shown at hours that most people do not watch TV, so of course the overrated shows are going to fair better if they are shown in a time slot that is during a prime viewing time.
I think some shows that are rarely seen or have not been viewed in many years may do great in the prime hours but networks do not see it that way, they would rather go on the first time ratings the show received and try to keep the shows ratings in syndication.
I can think of a few shows that did better once it was syndicated in reruns, but a lot of this was due to lineup times. Example - My So Called Life got a great following on MTV, Mama's Family did better in syndication and now in reruns, Bay Watch etc... but you have to remember some of the viewers are new to the shows a whole new generation is tuning in to see TCS, FP, Roseanne etc... it is not just the 25-45 year olds watching these shows. I personally liked these shows during there day and have tuned in over the past to recap on the show, but have grown tired of the same line up over and over, but thats the way of the world people dont like change if it makes them money.

That's the point I been trying to make on some of my posts. Why are we so "brainwash" into watching the same shows over and over and over again?!Especially thoes on N@N,N@N T.V. Land,TBS,ABC Family?!?I now understand the summer marathons, but still, when a show is being run into the ground,it can be madding! It's not so much about overrated or underrated;it's more about seeing the same schedule 2 to 3 years in a row without a change. Also,I beleive that some of these networks think that the only way to make money is to rush the newest shows on these networks(the so-called top rated "popular" ones)so that the million dollars plus they paid for each episode can be recoup quickly and fast.In this case I'm with you Greenlaser all the way!
2 to 3 years without any change? I'll go fetch you a TVLand schedule from this week, three years ago...

well, what ticks me off is that people say that you're "brainwashed" if you happen to enjoy shows that are overplayed. So because I still find entertainment value from Roseanne, Seinfeld and The Golden Girls, DESPITE airing at least 4 times a day each, I have been "brainwashed"? I can't happen to actually enjoy the shows in question?
