35. Burned Out (10/05/87) A fire in the attic forces the Hogans to seek refuge at Peter and Patty Poole's house.

I remember this particular episode and I use to watch the show all the time. I'm Darwin and I live in NJ and I'm 32. I NEED HELP on this episode. I remember as the house was on fire, Jason Bateman pulls up in his car and the car radio is playing - "96 Tears" by Question Mark & The Mysterians. Am I right? I love the song. I hope I was right cause I barely remembered it as a kid. But this song is unique. ANYONE KNOW????

Supposedly, this episode was filmed with Valerie Harper but when she left, they refilmed it with Sandy. Thus, a lost episode exists, the Valerie version of Burned Out.

This is incorrect. There is no Valerie version of Burned Out. The only show that Valerie Harper starred in was the episode that ultimately became what we know as Movin' On. This is the episode that introduced Sandy Duncan as Sandy Hogan.

A friend of mine who is friendly with Jeremy Licht answered this question a while back. The situation is this:

At the beginning of the third season, the show filmed Season 3's first episode without Valerie Harper and explained that she was away visiting her family back East. This was mentioned in a TV Guide Article as well. The episode was the first version of the episode Movin' On except that, of course, there was no Sandy Duncan in the episode since the Valerie Hogan character was alive and well and Valerie Harper was not yet fired from the show. They had hoped she'd be back and she had every intention of coming back.

When Valerie's contract situation was worked out, she came back to the studio and the cast reshot the episode to include Valerie. This is version # 2.

Afterwards, someone decided to fire Valerie even though things were worked out contract-wise. Lorimar said it was due to her disruptive behavior but the cast supported her in saying that she was professional and that she was dearly missed, so why she was fired is unclear. But after firing her, they brought in Sandy Duncan and the cast re-shot the same episode a third time, which was what we ultimately saw.

Any episode shot after this did not include Valerie Harper at all. Perhaps when the fire episode was conceived during the summer hiatus, it was intended to include Valerie. Lots of stories are planned long before they're actually shot so who knows. But there is no existing version of that episode other than what we saw.

The only 'lost' episodes are the two versions of the same episode that opened Season 3, nothing more. It's a shame though since I enjoyed the show much more with Valerie than with Sandy. Nothing against Sandy, but the show got sillier and was less witty. Its humour wasn't as smart, at least to me. Plus, the Valerie Hogan character was killed off, and to me wasn't given a proper send-off. I'm sure this had more to do with the fact that the producers were mad as hell at her, but they took it out on the Valerie Hogan character. She was the mother of those kids and her death should've devastated them, and for the most part they seemed unfazed. It was business as usual...

I'd like to see those alternate versions someday myself. Perhaps if the show is ever released on DVD we will see them. Stranger things have happened...

I would just like to say that I remember this episode about the fire from when I was a kid. My parents had a rule that we could either go to bed 30 minutes early and read for those 30 min or we could watch tv and then go to bed and not read. Some nights I picked tv, some nights I picked reading. The night of this episode, I picked tv. I watched their house burn down, and when it was over, my mom and dad were like, Ok.. bed time... I remember saying.. Not a chance! It took them about 45 minutes to get me to see that it would be ok and I think we went over the fire-escaping plan about 25 times....

But after all of that, it still is one of my favorites...

I really love this episode.
The great acting of Jason Bateman and Sandy Duncan is really heartbreaking.
I can't help my self but everytime when David walks into his old room realising the full extent of the disaster it makes me cry...:(
