You should have an 'other' because I'm torn between Mary and Betty, but I voted Betty. :)

Mary Tyler Moore. Here's another great female sitcom actress: Elizabeth Montgomery.

It's tough to pick. I have plenty. There's Cindy Williams, one of my picks as spunky, Shirley Feeney. She would enjoy telling sad stories, and of course, Boo-Boo Kitty. Her teammate, Penny Marshall (Laverne) ranks up, but not in the higher class. Here are other candidates:
1. Lucille Ball: One word: Vitametavegamin.
2. Elizabeth Montgomery: At her best with using witchcraft to get Darrin out of trouble.
3. Carol Burnett: No one can deny her funny ways as Eunice and many others.
4. Mary Tyler Moore: Only actress to turn two shows--DVD and MTM--on with her smile. As Mary Richards, she's the girl everyone wants to be with.
5. Valerie Harper: If everyone wants to be like Mary, a lot of us feel like Rhoda. She has a knack for jumping to conclusions. All of us can relate to her personality. I do.
The list goes on and on.

For me, it's a tough call between Carol Burnett and Lucille Ball.

Interesting to see all the responses...
But I really wanted actresses with longevity, like these four women. Granted, there are many other great comediennes, but these were ones that really stood out.

It was tough, for sure, because of their own unique abilities.
For me, Mary is the one to beat. Both of her primary TV roles are now cultural icons (of 2 different decades!) as well as benchmarks for comedic excellence. That's phenomenal! props:

Carol Burnett hands down! She is so versatile! As wonderful as Lucy is she just always plays"Lucy".
Here are my picks:
1. Lucille Ball
2. Mary Tyler Moore
3. Carol Burnett
In 4th place, ahead of Betty White, I would place Gracie Allen, the late Mrs. George Burns. I had a chance to watch reruns of the "Burns and Allen" show a few years ago and she was great. At one point, in the mid-50s, she was considered an equal to Lucy as far as funniest female TV comic, but, since her series doesn't get shown much these days, you tend to forget about her. I haven't, and I love her work, so here's my vote, just for her!
I Love Carol Burnett!

Carol Burnett, definitely!
Her show ran for 11 years, and she starred in so many hilarious movies! Also, she gave a 18 year old female a chance to shine on her show when she first started it in 1967...And that 18 year old female just happened to be my most favorite actress ever, Vicki Lawrence. THANK YOU, CAROL! :biglove:

I like Vicki Lawrence because Mama's Family is working its way up to my second fav show (Simpsons will always be first!), but I admit that I haven't seen any of her work outside of Mama's Family.

I'd say on screen, Lucy wins. I mean she's immortal in the world of television. However, I think (in real life) Betty White is the funniest. I mean she's always hilarious when she's on a talk show (mainly The Ellen Show). She's not half as funny on her shows (The Golden Girls, Mary Tyler Moore) as she is when she's being herself.
Back to Lucy, if she were still alive, I bet she'd be guest starring in a lot of sitcoms. Of course, I don't know how old she would be. Imagine her guest starring in a season 1 episode of "8 Simple Rules." That would have been great to see her with John Ritter.
My real choice, wasn't an option - Ellen DeGeneres. I'm laughing out loud at her show (and I don't usually laugh out loud). That goes for her new talk show as well as her 90's sitcom.
