Entertainer Vicki Lawrence is as funny as her hair is red. Very.

If laughter truly is the best medicine, the capacity crowd of 1,000 left feeling tip-top.

She had them laughing throughout her 90-minute talk, and the humor seemed natural and effortless for the Emmy award-winning comedienne.

Lawrence spoke about everything from menopause to "Mama's Family," the hit TV series in which she played the cranky lead character.

She told personal and humorous stories about moving the family home, obstetricians, and living and working in "Hollyweird."

Working on "The Carol Burnett Show" was "an incredible, awesome experience for me," she said.

She said she had the chance to laugh it up with Burnett and regulars Tim Conway and Harvey Korman. She got to work with Jimmy Stewart, Rita Hayworth and other legendary performers -- even Gloria Swanson.

And that's where she met her husband of 30 years, Al Schultz, a make-up man for CBS.

As for her 1973 hit record, "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia," she said she inherited the song by default. Her first husband wrote it but didn't want to record it.

It took months for the song to catch on and become the mega hit it was, she said.

In her mind, her coronation as a big recording artist was when she heard her song on an L.A. radio station while she was driving home.

She was elated and was "floating" as she walked into her house, only to find the dog had messed on the kitchen floor.

As she was down on her knees cleaning up the mess she cried to herself, "I shouldn't have to do this -- I'm a record star." She said the incident helped keep her grounded.

Lawrence is perhaps best known for her portrayal of Thelma Harper, a.k.a. "Mama," which had its origin as a sketch on "The Carol Burnett Show."

People recognize her and call out, "Yo! Mama!," she said.

Lawrence told her husband they could make a fortune if they opened their own chain of restaurants called Not Yo' Mama.

"And at the bottom of the menu I want it to say: Lost or stolen articles are not yo' mama's responsibility," she said to hoots of laughter.

Her otherwise storybook life took a turn downward after the demise of her daytime TV talk show in 1994.

Doing the talk show was immeasurable fun, but the behind-the-scenes trauma was a "nightmare" and was taking a toll on her health, marriage and family, she said.

The show ended abruptly with her unexpected firing, sending her into a tailspin.

"I hated life. I was so, so sad," Lawrence said.

Her husband forced her to go on vacation, and while moping along the beach one day, a self-help book propped up on a beach towel caught her attention.

It was a copy of "Your Body Believes Every Word You Say" by Barbara Hoberman Levine.

Then and there Lawrence made a vow to get her act together.

Another book that helped Lawrence was "New Passages: Mapping Your Life Across Time" by Gail Sheehy.

What really helped her recover was a Valentine's Day gift from her husband, a 7-week-old black Labrador retriever.

"Hanna is responsible for helping me to smile again," she told the crowd.

There isn't a day that goes by that she doesn't rest her head against now-grown Hanna's barrel chest "to thank her for saving my life," she said.

"When I decided to laugh again, it was like the sun came out," she said.

It served to remind her of her credo: Life is much too serious to be taken seriously.

Lawrence advised the crowd to appreciate what they have, to take one day at a time, and "you must laugh -- find the humor in your life."

-A LP album frame (The last time I went to Target, they were out of stock...THEY HAVE THEM IN STOCK NOW :mango)
-A pack of Hanes socks
-A new color ink cartridge for my printer
-Animal Crossing for the GameCube (it was $70 this time last year; it's $30 now)
-The 1st season of Will & Grace on DVD (for my mom's b-day, it's on Feb 18th...She doesn't have a DVD player yet, so I"m working on that)

That's all. I've never spent $100 so quickly. :lol:

I think you can take classes from surrounding colleges...I dunno, I've never looked into it...But where I used to live, the college there offered IVN classes (where one class from another town meets up via a TV setup). It was pretty cool. :)

Yep..Online is a whole lot different than in real life...I think I may have a problem...If I go out in public, everybody really bugs me...I get irritated too easily...stuff like that. I made the mistake of going to the mall today. OY! It was just TOO crowded. I was planning to be there for only 1/2 hour, but it turned into 2 hours...People and traffic..ohno:

Does your wrist pound like a headache does? Mine does that. I probably have whatever that thing is called cause I spend way too much time on the computer. I don't have an L-shaped desk, but I'mma build one for my room when I redo it. I've watched too many Trading Spaces episodes. :lol: I'mma build my stuff!

It's been doing it lately...Only on the weekends tho. :lol: Most of the time, it just gets really sore.
