Could someone please explain how to use them here?

Go to "User CP" and then click "Edit Options", scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page and then click "Change Avatar". It'll come up with avatars to choose from or you can scroll down and enter a weblink to make your own avatar(although it must be small).
