Andy Meets Latka By Night Court Fan
Andy Kaufman was still wearing Latka's clothes when
he left the "Taxi" set. As he was leaving the building, he saw
a door he hadn't seen before. He walked toward the door and
opened it. Andy started falling! He fell for what seemed like
an eternity, but actually was only a few minutes. He landed
on the "Taxi" set. (or so he thought)
"Hi, Latka, How you are doing today?" asked Alex Reiger.
"Hi, Judd. I'm fine" replied Andy.
Alex sat down next to Elaine Nardo. "Did he just call
me Judd?"
"Yes, Alex" said Elaine. Latka is weirder than normal
today".
"Hi, Tony" said Andy when he saw Tony Banta.
"Him he knows!" said a disgusted Alex.
"I can't help it if I have a very unforgettable face"
said Tony with a smile.
"I wish I could forget it" chimed in Louie Depalma,
nasty dispatcher extradinare.
"Shut up, Louie!" said Tony.
"I am not Latka!" yelled Andy. "I am Andy Kaufman."
Reverend Jim walked right up to Andy and shook his hand.
"Nice to meet you Andy, my name is Jim!"
"Jim, Andy is just one of Latka's personalities."
said Elaine.
"Either that, or he's just acting" said Alex.
"Wow, Latka" said Tony. "You're a better actor than Bobby!
But don't tell him I said that or I'll deny it!"
"Anybody is a better actor than Wheeler" said Louie.
"I meant Bobby DeNiro!" answered Tony.
Before Louie could quote Mr. Deniro in "Taxi Driver",
Simka walked in.
"Hey Simka" yelled Louie. "Tell this nut bag over
here his name isn't Andy Kaufman!"
"Your name isn't Andy Kaufman" repeated Simka.
"Tell him what his real name is" said Alex
"How in the world should I know?" said a confused
Simka.
"You don't remember your husband's name?" Now
Elaine was confused.
"I sure do remember my husband's name. It's
Latka."
Just then Latka walked in.
"Latka you're late!" yelled Louie. "Oh no, there are
two of them. I thought one was bad enough!"
"Hi, I am Latka Gravas." Latka extended his hand to
Andy.
"Hi, I am Andy Kaufman." Andy and Latka shook
hands.
"Wow", said Reverend Jim. How do you throw your
body like that? I've heard of throwing your voice, but never
of throwing your body! This is cool. Aint it boss?"
"Yeah, cool" said Louie.
Everybody stared at Jim.
"Hey let's all go to Mario's" said Alex.
At Mario's, Latka and Andy got a separate table,
so they could talk.
Andy told Latka all about the TV show "Taxi"
and about the actors and actresses who played Latka's friends
and wife. Latka seemed very interested.
"I want to be star!" said Latka in his adorable accent.
"I want to be Andy and you be Latka"
"Okay" said Andy in Latka's accent.
"Okay" said Latka in Andy's accent.
Andy lived as Latka and Latka lived as Andy for many
years. Nobody knew the difference. One day something tragic
happened.
On thanksgiving day, in 1983, Latka had a really
bad cough. He went to the doctors and found out he had
lung cancer. He died on May 16, 1984.
Most people thought Andy died. And some thought he
faked his death. Andy did neither!
Andy is living Latka's life. He might some day
find his way back to our world, or maybe he never will!
But he will always live on in our hearts! (and on "Taxi" reruns)
