What a week movie that was... opened up #1 to a measly 22-24 million, peanutes by today's standards, etc... and now with Jack Nicholson's movie, Lord of the Rings, Nicole Kidman, etc... the movie bombed because Tom Cruise needs to have a well known actress or supporting actor to get the film better box office numbers...Last Samuria had nobody in that move...he was left to carry it all by himself, thus his name is no longer that popular... think about it... all his movies has some well know supporting actors, etc... Last Samurai was filmed to the Japanese audience and o famous well known box office draws for supporting actors... so this movie bombed...your thoughts?

was it really a bomb? it's no blockbuster, but I figure it'll gross 100-125 million when all is said and done. A bomb is something like Gigli or From Justin To Kelly. You can't compare it to a huge franchise like LOTR or Matrix that has a built in audience

The predictions of the movie it was suppose to make about 200 million. I knew no way in hell it was gonna make that much. Its doing okay, but I don't think this movie bombed because lack of well known actress and i don't consider it a bomb because I think their expectations were too high for the studio. A bomb is when a studio loses money or the movie does alot less than expected. I guess you could say its a bomb, but with oscar noms and release in dvd, its gonna keep making money. Eddie Murphy's movie "The adventures of Pluto Nash was a bomb. it cost over 100 million to make and it didn't make more than 10 million in box office. Or how about Matrix Revolutions. 100-150 million to make and it only made about 130. well, sure that doesn't should bad but compared to what Reloaded made 250 + its not too succuessful this time around.

If a movie can make at least 100 million it is really not considered a flop.

Revolutions only did $130 mil? wow (well, not ONLY, but compared to the last one). And here i thought I was the only person who hated Reloaded enough to not wanna see the third one.

I think people invest way too much money on movies nowadays. Believe it or not, a mere 10 years ago, anything over $10 million opening week was considered a success. Plus, a lot of us wait until middle of the week when theaters are not quite as crowded to go to a film

Well, it opend up of $22-24 million, number 1 right? but last week (the 2nd week) the total earning so far was only $35 million in just two weeks!

I know for a fact the movie was over $120 million to make... now I'm sure when it'a ll said and done (maybe, maybe with the help of rentals and dvd release) it will come out EVEN, but no profits worth mentioning... at this rate if it only made $35 million after two weeks, and each week it dimishes, especially since LOTR, Nicholson movie, Nicole Kidman Movie, etc...that will push Last Samurai to #5-8 earning less than $10 million, etc..then $6-7 million after that...

You must count alot of movies as bombs because The Haunted Mansion did not as you say TOTALLY bombed because it made pretty good money at the box office for a December debut. Like Buffy said, a total bomb would be something like From Justin to Kelley or Gigli. In the summer, 24 million dollars would be a measly amount of money but this is December. In 3 weeks THM has made 53 mill, and thats not bad for this time of year.

Plus The Last Samurai will most likely get Oscar noms so that will boost DVD and VHS sales.

exactly, Last Samurai and Haunted Mansion have both done "okay". People are too busy comparing other movies to the box office gross something like LOTR, Harry Potter or Spiderman did, instead of if it did good on it's own merit. It's just like the same people who will call a cd a bomb for selling 2 million copies just because an Eminem cd sold 9 million.

I agree. People need to stop comparing movies to the bigger movies. If you compare something like Haunted Mansion to Harry Potter you really cant enjoy it.

I loved Last Samurai.
