Touch choice between Braveheart and Titanic, but I think I will have to go with the bigger fish. Although, Saving Private Ryan was better than all five of these movies and should have definitely beat the just ok Shakespeare in Love. Spielberg was robbed!

Braveheart is way too violent and gory for me. I tried watching it twice and I couldn't even stand it for less than an hour. I liked what I saw, though, but it is really gross. It seemed like every scene made me cringe. I liked Shakespeare in Love but I think the best of those choices was American Beauty. It was popular at my old high school. Awesome movie. I think Titanic is one of the most overrated films of all time. I like John Cameron's other works but I just didn't like Titanic. I could not comprehend to this day what all the buzz was about with Titanic.

American Beauty.
An all around great film.

Titanic and Shakespeare in Love don't even deserve their Best Oscar titles.

Braveheart was a very good movie, but to me it fell short in some aspect of being complete. I could pinpoint it if I watched it again, because it has been some time.

I never sat through all of The English Patient.
I lack the American Patience.

That's what I was thinking. After the Oscars I watched Shakespeare in Love and I have to say I was surprised that it won an Academy Award. I liked it and I thought it was a good movie but I didn't think of it as a Best Picture winner. *Maybe* a nomination for Best Picture but I think there were movies that were better suited for that category than Shakespeare in Love.

I'd go with Titanic. That was my last movie theatre experience, and probably my best. My second choice is American Beauty.

Same here. I fell asleep after about 45 minutes of this film. How it was nominated for over 10 Oscar's is beyond me.

I'll go with Braveheart. I love a good action film, plus I'm Scottish, so it's near & dear to my heart. :D

Tough call. "Braveheart" is a great film, but "American Beauty" has some incredible performances, not to mention an amazing script.

I'm calling a tie.

Titianic was pure wonderful. It made you laugh and cry. It was the best. It was so romantic.

In my opinion, they're all very overrated. I voted for Titanic, only because it's a movie that will last forever. Still, the whole Titanic craze blocked out a bunch of fabulous films that didn't really stand a chance. The best movie of that year was definately "Dark City" (and Roger Ebert agrees with me on this) and had Titanic not been Titanic, there would have been a lot more interest in it and other films. Most people didn't watch the other films that year, they just kept watching Titanic, over and over

Shakespeare in Love was a good movie, not a great one. Braveheart I just didn't like, American Beauty was too weird, and English Patient was so overblown. In hindsight, I guess English Patient was the most deserving of its Oscar, but none of these are my favorites. Some of the nominees in these years were just amazing. Anyone want to explain to me why Babe and The Full Monty were ever nominated?
