View Full Version : 80's Hip Hop movies
I saw this movie this moring on Flix called "Beat Street", and it brought me back to memory lane, back in the day years before "8 Mile" there were movies about Hip Hop.
Does anyone remember them? Movies like "Krush Grove", "Breakin", and "Beat Street". I like those movies. They were funny, had classic hip hop artists like Kurtis Flow, Run DMC, Grand Master Flash and Furious Flash, and it took it self seriously but not to seriously.

All great movies, watching them definitely transports me back to that time. When hip hop was more about fun than the bling-bling thug atmosphere it's turned into recently. I have all those on dvd: Beat Street, Krush Groove, Breakin', Breakin' 2:Electric Boogaloo, Rappin' and Wild Style.

LOL@Tvje spelling Kurtis Blow Kurtis Flow & Furious Five Furious Flash hahahahahahahahaha. Krush Groove is a classic. I used to have it on tape. I'm gonna buy that on videotape soon. Sheila E looked so good in Krush Groove. Beat Street was a classic too. Rae Dawn Chong was in that movie. She sure did disappear. Breakin & Breakin 2 are classics also. Those movies come on digital cable all the time. The Last Dragon movie with 80's r&b singer Vanity is also a classic. I love that movie. I used to have a crush on Vanity back in the day. She was hot back then & she still looks good today. Vanity is a born again christian now & she doesn't go by the name Vanity anymore. She has her own website cause she is a evangelist at a church in LA. I've sent her a email a couple of times & she never responded. I would've loved to hear from her.

My sister is completely obsessed with hip-hop films. She saw Breakin' 2 about 5 months ago, she's always been into hip-hop- but then after seeing breakin' 2 she became obsessed! She bought Breakin' and my aunt's bought her Beat Street for christmas, and she looks everywhere for hip-hop movies and hip-hop breakdancing training tapes and stuff. I tried to get her Wild Style on video but it's OOP over here now.

Webuster, are you not in the States? I know Wild Style came out on dvd a little over a year ago. There's another dvd y'all should check out called "Style Wars", it's all about graffiti and break dancing. It's a documentary done in the early 80's for public television, and when you watch it now you see how far hip hop has come.

LOL, you emailed Vanity? What did you say that made her not respond? The Last Dragon is one of my favorite movies too.

Yeah i emailed Vanity & i didn't say anything derogatory to her. I just told her how much of a fan i was of her's & that i used to have a crush on her when i was young. I don't know why she hasn't responded back yet. I guess she must be very busy preaching the word of god LOL. Entertainers seem to forget that if it wasn't for the fans, they wouldn't be where they are at. I ain't never sending a letter or emailing another entertainer in my life cause entertainers act like they too busy to respond to their fans & most of them get the big head when they become successful.

I haven't seen 'You've Got Served' yet, but I've seen the trailer and it looks like an updated sort of 80's hip hop film. I'm surprised hip hop films didn't make a return sooner- it'd been popular for quite a while now. And I despise the phrase 'Bling bling'- it pisses me off. I thought 8-Mile, even though it's a rap film- could've started a wave of new hip-hop, 'can't act but I sure can dance' sort of films.
