I was watching the episode in which Wally gets a job as a soda jerk at the drugstore and delivers ice cream to Mary Ellen's slumber party, and I got to thinking how silly it seemed that high school girls were still having slumber parties!
So, my question to you girls is - at what age did you attend your last slumber party? I was in 6th grade, I'm pretty sure. (Actually, I was supposed to attend another slumber party at the end of 6th grade, but it was co-ed, and several boys I hated were going to be there. (Co-ed slumber parties were acceptable in some circles in the '70's). The thought of any boy seeing me in my pajamas, plus the possibility of having to play some embarassing game like "Spin the Bottle" was just too much, so I pretended I was sick and got out of it! :(

a co-ed slumber party? Interesting! I never thought of parents being that open-minded to permitting a boy/girl slumber party. When I was in high school, we had slumber parties, and the boys would try to crash them for the hope of seeing their girl friends in teddies.

Well I remember in HS spending the night at friends houses with several other girls but we didn't call them slumber parties anymore. We just called it Spending the night.

As a boy, we did the same, but we called it "sleeping over"....
Slumber parties were just for girls....and cooties. :)

Well, I was surprised that my parents would allow me to go, but then the girl whose party it was went to my church, and my parents knew her parents very well. Her mom had told the parents that the boys and girls would sleep in separate areas - the plan was to have the boys sleep outside (this was in June) and the girls sleep inside. (Yeah, right!;)

I'm in 7th grade and my friends and I enjoy getting all together spending the night. But it all depends on what the occasion is. When it's a birthday we call it a spend the night B-day party. If it's New Years Eve, we just think it's stupid to go home after midnight. If it's a nice summer night we usally camp out. But to answer your question, I have a friend in 9th grade and she loves "slumber parties" as much we do. The last one I was at was for my B-day which we held at my house on Sept. 12.

If I remember correctly, high school girls back in the 1950s were the ones that had the slumber parties (or pajama parties),,not so much the elementary school girls. As time went on it filtered down to the younger age groups. So I think that was normal that Mary Ellen had a slumber party in that time period the show was made.

Oh, I didn't realize that! I remember now that there was a scene in "Grease" where the girls are having a slumber party, too, so I guess this was a typical activity for high school girls in the '50s.

I saw that episode and couldn;t get over how the girls went goo gaa over Wally. It's as if Prince Andrew walked in the door. I thought they went over board.

Maybe this is a bit off topic, but that slumber party episode is my all time favorite. The site of Lumpy Rutherford with the ice cream running down his head is the shows funniest moment!

It's definitely one of my all time favorites too! I love the scene you mention, plus the one right after it when Eddie is peaking out his window to see who's at the door. He knew Wally would be coming, but Wally knew Eddie knew and hid on him. Great stuff!!! Not to mention the earlier bit in the Drugstore when Eddie tries to give Wally "the business". Funny episode all the way around!

Thats a good question B&W. How much more can Universal make from snyndicating the show. With TV land being the main channel for the show, I don't know how many independents are still showing LITB. They would make millions off a DVD set. In the meantime, I have every episode on video do you?

I do, but I wish I had used better tapes, and taped at SP mode instead of EP, when I got them off TVLand about 5 years ago. Although there might be one or two I don't have if TVLand has skipped some (and I think they have).

This is just a guess on my part but I think girls in high school still had slumber parties because it was a way for them to get together and have fun and stay out of trouble so I didn't think much of it. I was not permitted to go to slumber parties because I had a very strict ex Marine for a dad,but to be honest with you I enjoyed being with my grandparents more because I was way too shy and didn't have many friends.

Gosh watching these 50's and 60's comedies make me wish I could start over.I was so shy in school and if I could start over it would be fun to be a mayfield girl.

Of course, the one big difference here is that the girls of Mayfield were actually of high-school age, whereas the actresses in Grease were probably in their 30's (done so, of course, so that Travolta and Newton-John wouldn't look TOO old) ...
