This is tough but what decided my pick was that the father of Good Times was only on 3 seasons. So since that's the case, i have to give the edge to the Jeffersons.

Well, to be honest I've only seen two episodes. Maybe I'll give it another shot but from what I've watched it just wasn't my kind of show.

I prefer The Jeffersons.

To tell you the truth, John Amos was the only thing about Good Times that I liked.

Liked them both, but would have to pick Good Times. The Jeffersons was a funny show but I feel an affinity to GT's realism in that they dealt with child abuse, gang violence, a death in the family, rent parties, etc. I don't have the Jeffersons dvd season sets yet, but I had to have the Good Times first season dvd the day it came out.

Out of the two spin-offs, I'll choose The Jeffersons. I grew up watching George and Weezie every morning. I watched Good Times for a while, but it wasn't interesting enough to keep me watching. Georgie and Weezie forever. :D

I mean it was too political. And trying to tell the audience how to think. That detracted from the comedy angle and got tiresome! Especially Michael! JJ was hilarious though! At least the Jefferson's kept it light :D You asked which we prefer so I chose The Jefferson's.(I despise "message" shows)

Penny Lane, love your name and avitar, huge Beatle fan always loved Paul!

Anyway, I respect what you say, but how can you disregard the fact that the Jeffersons, at least in my opinion, was always having George hate anything that was associated with white people unless he benefitted from it. I mean he did everything he could to discourage racial harmony by calling his future daughter-in-law racial slurs, offending her parents (why can't a white man fall in love with a black woman?). At least on GT the mother tried to tell her son, whenever he had a dispute with a racial topic that not all people are the same. All George Jefferson ever did was scream racial slurs towards Tom Willis and his family, I think GT for what it worth, tried to give some kind of family values, by showing that a family that is poor can still have dignity and pride, I think I would rather be like the Evans family poor and with pride instead of the Jefferson rich, predjudice and ignorant. Again just my opinion. :D

Yes, I agree with with the family values thing! To me The Jefferson's was just more fun!
Well, George was like Archie Bunker in reverse. It was done in fun. I want to watch sitcoms to laugh. I guess Good Times just got on my nerves!
I am always thrilled to find another Beatles fan!

Hey, are you excited about he new Beatles "Let It Be-Raw" album, I am definitely looking forward to this. Currently reading the book "Shout, the Beatles in their Generation," talks about how they were really the worst band in England and how they evolved. peacesign:

Defintely the Jeffersons.

All in the Family was Lear's best, The Jeffersons, though, is a close second.

Aye, yet another tough question...both "Good Times" and 'The Jeffersons" have their merits...and their liabilities.

The good:
Both shows showed more-or-less positive depictions of Black families (The Evanses were a fully-functional family dynamic, and the Jeffersons were NOT struggling financially); both shows displayed a strong patriarchal leadership, i.e. James Evans, Sr., and George Jefferson were clearly the heads of the household, and their wives, Florida and Louise, while not subserviant, fully respected and supported their men (when they weren't making fools of themselves); and the children of both series were not of the sentimental variety found on other sitcoms of the era ("Brady Bunch" or "Family Affair", anyone?), but semi-realistic portrayals of the then-current youth culture.

The bad:
Both shows had an annoying tendency to get on the soapbox and become overly-preachy (actually, this is a liability on all of Norman Lear's CBS sitcoms of the era {with the exception of "Sanford and Son", which was on NBC and avoided the soapbox altogether}...Mr. Lear's liberal politics was clearly on display in "Maude", "One Day At A Time", and the short-lived "All's Fair". Even "All In The Family", the one show that managed to pull off the soapboxing with any finesse, overdid-it on occasion.);
some of the storylines were contrieved or melodramatic in tone and execution (J.J.'s drugged-out prom date; Florence's kidnapping); and an over-reliance on put-down humor (i.e. "the dozens", usually between the male and female cast members (J.J. and Thelma; George and Florence or George and Helen Willis).

The UGLY:
Disasterous cast changes (the firing of John Amos from "Good Times" mortally wounded this show, which died a long, agonizing death; the replacement of Mike Evans with Damon Evans as Lionel muted the sharp satirical edge of "The Jeffersons"); backstage in-fighting ( a power struggle between the stars of GT and producer Lear that led to the dismissal of Amos), and a general blandness that besets such long-running programs after a few seasons.

Now, having cataloged all of the above, I have to say that when both shows were in their prime, it was an enjoyable experience, so I'd have to say I like BOTH shows equally. Both were unique in their conception and execution, so it's hard for me to pick one over the other.

Now, if we were comparing these two shows to "Sanford and Son"....;)

Well, there's always the wonderful world of fan-fiction...

Then again, George Jefferson and James Evans in the same room could be a pretty volitile mix, what with George's bigotry and James's temper...but I'll bet Florida and Weezie would be good friends, though...and Lionel and Michael (I FINALLY spelled it right!!) could compare notes about their families...
