Roseanne's Parents

I watched the episode when Roseanne's father dies. We saw his girlfriend, or mistress as they called her, and Roseanne mentioned that he was with her for 22 years. When Roseanne was saying goodbye to him in his casket, she said that she was mad at him for leaving them with a crazy mother.

Recently, there was an episode where Roseanne insists that Dan spend more time with Becky. In turn, she tries to get closer with Darlene. There's a conversation between Roseanne and Jackie, and Roseanne said that their father always favored Jackie.
That episode ended with Roseanne calling her father, talking to him, getting bored with him--and asking him to put Mom on the phone. Her parents were obviously living together.

Is this an inconsistency or is there something I don't know? What's the deal? Thanks.

It's not really inconsistent, because he had been SEEING the mistress for 22 years, and Bev knew about it most of the time but put up with it.

Thanks, but I still need a little clarification. Why did Roseanne tell him in his casket that she was mad that he left them?

Why did Jackie yell at Roseanne for not allowing Jean (Joan?) in her home when their father was alive? Why would Roseanne ever be expected to have her father's mistress in her house if her parents were still together?

Did we ever see Roseanne's parents together in prior episodes?

Were Roseanne's parents living together at the time of his death, and did they always live together?

Actually both of Roseanne's parents were inroduced in the first Thanksgiving episode. That's the last time we see her father. Roseanne's father was a patio furniture salesman that often brought him away fom home, and that's what Roseanne was referring to when she alluded to the fact that he would leave them alone with their mother. Roseanne resented Joan (the mistress) because in her conversations with her, Joan was always bragging how her father would only say wonderful things about Jackie and Roseanne when Roseanne knew that he was hiding his abusive attitude towards the two of them from Joan. Bev (Jackie and Roseanne's mom) simply put up with the cheating because she was raised to stand by her man and was terribly afraid of being alone if he did leave her. On another note, it just seemed to eerie for Joan to be at the wake. No one was overjoyed to see her.

No, Roseanne's parents seemed to only live together occasionally(it certainly wasn't the normal husband/wife relationship) he was living in Kansas City with the Mistress most of the time and that is why in the Thanksgiving 1991 episode he doesn't appear, this is the episode where it is made known that he was having this affair.

I guess Roseanne was mad that her dad left her and Jackie with their mother.

BTW: The father dying episode has a HILAROUS segment. Right after the opening credits roll, Jackie calls Annie Barber and says "Annie Barber, It's Jackie, Jackie, I'm fine, fine, I have some bad news, Dad is not with us anymore, I said dad has passed away, he's passed away, Dad is gone, Dad's DEAD!, No DEAD!, DEAD!!!!, he's fine, he sends his love."

I died laughing after that one...:happyface :lol:

Thanks Brent, and you're right. I have this episode on tape and rewatched it for clues I may have missed the first time around.
When Bev shows up at Roseanne's house--Roseanne tells her that Joan called with the details of his death...he died of a heart attack while traveling on business...
At the Lobo, Roseanne asked Joan for information about how her father felt...regrets, etc. She told Joan, "Since you're the only person who was with him the last few years...."
In that same scene, Roseanne tells Joan that it's weird that she's sitting there with her dead father's mistress to which Joan replies, "I'm not a mistress in Kansas city, only in Lanford." Of course, Roseanne comes back with, "No, you're known as something else in Lanford." lol

Evidently, Roseanne's parents had split and were not together for a few years.
Incidently, Joan is played by an actress named, Kay Arnold. I'm wondering if she's related to Tom Arnold.

no, her father is in the the "dear mom and dad" (or something) episode, then he comes back for the thanksgiving one. he's in two episodes.

I think you guys got it all figured out. But the episode where dad dies, I think that's the best episode of the entire series.

It brought up so many deep emotional issues in the family yet there was a totally hilarious script. Like when Jackie is picking out the coffin and Dan is with her- "So what your saying is that if we really loved him we'd get the white Rose, but if not we'd get something with a twist tie and the word hefty on the side."

And then there was a throwaway line. Jackie is whinning about having the call people about the funeral.

"But he just died, we shouln't have to call people. We're supposed to be mourning."

Roseanne- (out of patience) Then wear a veil over your face while you do it.

I think this would be the perfect episode to show Rosenne "haters" because it would instantly win them over.

Now I know for sure. Roseanne's parents were divorced at the time of his death. The last few episodes have dealt with Bev coming to live in Lanford and become a partner in The Lunch Box.

She talks about the divorce and jokes that she cleaned him out....says he won't be able to retire.

I'm not trying to be nit picky or anything, but Roseanne's parents were actually introduced to the show for the first time in the episode entitled: Dear Mom And Dad, which was episode number 22. That was the episode where Darlene couldn't sleep because Grandpa was making weezing noises in her bathroom. The Thanksgiving episode was actually their second, and final appearance together on the show.

Btw, did you guys' know that the guy who played Roseanne's dad (Jack Randolph) played Suzanne Pleschette's dad in Newhart? He also played Michael Gross's dad in a Family Ties episode.

Yes, Bev moved to Lanford a few months(on the show) before the dad died... they had gotten divorced after Bev found out about the affair(which we found out about on Thanksgiving 1991)
