Newman suicidal?

I'm watching an old episode from the first season or second probably and Kramer mentions to Jerry that Newman was up on the roof threatening to jump and kill himself 2 or 3 times in the episode.

That is something the Newman in later episodes would NEVER do.

How things change from those first episodes, I tell ya.

Yes, they never actually show him in that episode. He was pretty pitiful in some of the later episodes, so a suicide may not have been completely out of the question.

I'm glad they didn't kill Newman off, he became a great character on the show.

Didnt Newman not have a job in that episode? If so how did he wind up with the Son of Sam mailbag?
