which is your fave of this year? Even tho it's nearly 20 years ago, much of this music is still classic. Which album is your fave of the following choices

Tough choices, but I would go with U2.

The title track is the best song ever.

That's right, I said it. EVER!

Seeing as how I took my username from liner notes of the album released previous to it, I had to pick Purple Rain. I like some of the others, but 1984 became Prince's year with the three-pack punch of single/album/movie When Doves Cry/Purple Rain

Prince's "Purple Rain."

There was great music from that year!

I went with Metallica since they are my favorite out of that list.

'Ride the Lightening' by Metallica and 'Stay Hungry' by Twisted Sister.

'Purple Rain' by Prince is a close second

"Ride The Lightning" by Metallica.

I was about to vote for "Stay Hungry" by Twisted Sister, but I don't know if I can vote multiple times. Btw, 1984 was a big year for Ratt as well as a lot of other L.A. bands, surprising to not see them up there.

Madonna "Like a Virgin". I have it on vinyl and on CD. What about these albums that doesn't go to the poll:

1. Wham! "Make It Big"
2. Julio Inglesias "1100 Bel Air Place"
3. Diana Ross "Swept Away"
4. Michael Jackson "Farewell My Summer Love"
5. DeBarge "In a Special Way"

The best song on the album by far, an unheralded classic that always stirred up an emotion in me.

The rest of the album I can actually take or leave.

Another of U2's best songs that never gets its props is "Red Hill Mining Town," from The Joshua Tree.

I always had a theory about U2: you ever kind of notice that when they came out with a "mediocre" album, you knew that the one to follow was going to blow everyone away?

1. "Boy" --Okay, first album, but before the album came out were a bunch of singles you could only find on imports and demos. Nothing great on these import singles, but it showed their potential. "Boy" was the crowning moment when all the energy of those really came together on a killer debut.

2. "October" --The "sophomore slump" album. Kind of forced together because of stolen lyrics in their first American tour in Portland, OR. Bono was pressed to come out with something, and he started to sing about his faith in God, and really succeeded in making one of the most vibrant Christian albums in the world. It wasn't perfect, but it was fresh, and it showed U2 about to deliver on its potential.

3. "War" --The first masterpiece of U2. The album that knocked everyone away. The songs were urgent, biting, painful. "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Years Day"--who in the world was playing guitar like the Edge?? The songs were angry, searching, and expressed hope in the end.

4. "The Unforgettable Fire" --New producers Eno and Lanois. New direction, more of Eno's and Lanois' creation. A band that was experimenting. Except for "Pride", there were no big anthems. "Bad" was to become a concert staple, however, as evidenced on "Wide Awake In America" and the Live Aid concert.

5. "The Joshua Tree" --one of the hugest, most important albums of the 80's. Full of U2's impressions of America, with a real American sound. One of U2's most Christian statements comes from the song "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For."

6. "Rattle and Hum" --more live overkill of the Americana phase of U2, now that they had become the biggest band of the 80's.
The studio songs are great, however.

7. "Achtung Baby" --At the dawn of the 90's, U2 shifts gears and direction with focusing on the re-opening of Europe at the end of the Cold War, with electronica and dance oriented music. Stil definitely U2 sound, with "The Fly" and "One."

8. "Zooropa" and "Pop" --they continue the dance-pop direction further with eleborate stage shows with videos, costumes, and glittering lemons, but by the end of the PopMart, the techno phase had reached its limit.

9. "All That You Can't Leave Behind" --U2 returns to their rock roots with songs like "Elevation", "A Beautiful Day", and "Walk On." What's next?

Me too. That song reminds me of a dear departed member of my family, so that U2 album will always be my favorite.

Isn't it kind of against the law to not mention Cyndi Lauper's "She's So Unusual" when discussing the best albums of 1984? For Pete's Sake, lol. I'm gonna have to vote for her. Off that list I'll have to say Madonna, although curiously I loathe the song that shares the title with the album.

Dlemond nailed it!! "Red Hill Mining Town" might be the best thing on the Joshua Tree. Such an emotional song. I remember when they came to Atlanta in December 1987.......and THEY DIDN'T SING IT!! I was kind of put off, but it was a GREAT show nonetheless.

Back to the original topic. My album of the year ended in a tie (yes, I actually gave/give imaginary awards...don't tell anyone). Purple Rain and Heartbeat City in a dead heat.

SSU was released in 1983. It may have peaked in 1984, but I'd count it for 1983 instead (I know Eurythmics' Touch is dated 1983, but it didn't come out in the US until early 1984, 83 was it's release in the UK)

You're kidding. Lyrics.com needs to get their act together. Before I posted my message, I was about 70% sure SSU was released in 84, but just to be sure I went to lyrics.com first and it shows it as 84. :grr:

Shucks, you know what? Many websites are saying it was released in 84, except CyndiLauper.com did say the end of 83 (as well as some other websites that have it together.) I hate it when something is released at the end of the year and sources just count it as the next year... screws up people like me who were too young to know the real deal. Thanks for correcting me.

well, SSU came out towards the end of 1983, like September or October. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun was released in November 1983 (it debuted on the 12-10-1983 issue of Billboard), but it exploded on the charts in early 1984. SSU and Madonna's debut album both kinda had the same trajectories, they were released in 1983 and didn't really take off until 1984.

Right, but at least most sources know Madonna's first album did come out in 83... I knew that one at least. Lyrics.com (which sucks anyways) has Madonna's first album as 83, but has Cyndi's as 84. Go figure. Dang, so my mom WAS right a few months ago when she said "Girl's Just Wannt Have Fun" came out in 83. Well, I bet she was just guessing anyways.

lol, I understand totally. When I was new here last fall, I pissed a lot of people off by bumping up old threads. Sorry, but it's a free country, people have the god-given right to add their 2 cents to a subject that hasn't been posted on in 4 months if they want to, especially if they weren't posting here when the thread was fresh:talk:

Prince's Purple Rain & Bruce Springsteen's Born In The USA are my favorites from that yr. Debarge's In A Special Way album came out in 83. Dazz Band's Jukebox album came out in 84. That's a good album too. The hit song Let It All Blow was on that album. I think Whodini's Escape album came out in 84 too. That album had the hits Five Minutes Of Funk, Freaks Come Out At Night, Big Mouth, Friends. Run DMC's first album came out in 84 & that's a classic. Fat Boys first album came out in 84 which is also a classic. The Jacksons Victory album came out in 84. How could ya'll forget that album? The classic songs Torture, Wait, One More Chance, State Of Shock, Body were on that album. I remember their videos for Torture & Body. They had their classic concert tour that yr. Jermaine Jackson's self titled album also came out in 84 with the hits Dynamite, Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin, Do What U Do. Midnight Star's Planetary Invasion album came out in 84 which is a classic & had the hits Body Snatchers, Curious, Operator.

New Edition's self titled 2nd album came out in 84 & it's a classic. That album had the hits Cool It Now, Mr Telephone Man, Delicious, My Secret(Didja Gitit Yet). I also think Whitney Houston's first album came out that yr with the hits U Give Good Love To Me, Thinkin About U, Saving All My Love For U.

I think all the albums mentioned stand up well today, and out of all of them I think Purple Rain is the best, but I have to go with my girl Sade!

Victory was okay I guess, but IMO, was such a letdown from both Thriller/Off The Wall and Destiny/Triumph. I don't think Victory would've sold nearly as many copies had it not come out during MJ-mania, Destiny and Triumph didn't sell as many copies, but the songs off that album have aged better and are generally regarded as better.

Victory album was good to me. There were only 3 songs on that album i didn't like which were Be Not Always, We Can Change The World, The Hurt. Kool & The Gang's Emergency album came out in 84 & had the hits Fresh, Misled, Cherish. The Time's Ice Cream Castles album came out in 84 & had the hits Ice Cream Castles, Jungle Love, The Bird.

I admit preferring the funky 70's pre-JT Kool And The Gang, but they did still have a great singles run in the 1980's with songs like Fresh, Get Down On It, Tonight, etc....
